Pipsleo Boy Scout Reservation: Jason Greer (1) gets ready to blow by a lapped rider in the rain on the last lap of the Pipslco 100, the third round of the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series In Surry. Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 3: Pipsico 100 Surry with the Greer on Top Bv HEATHER GREER 5(JRRY,VA,APR.21 he third round of the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series was held at the Pipsico Boy Scout Reservation in Surry, Virginia. With the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared" in mind, riders needed everything from sunscreen to rain gear to get through the day. "In 15 years of racing, I don't think I have ever seen weather and track conditions change so much during the time of a race," commented AA rider George Greer. During the Mini event, it was warm and sunny - an almost perfect spring day. The clouds started rolling in at the start of the main event, making conditions breezy and cool for the first half of the race. By the end of the race, riders were having some serious flashbacks of the first round's Glade Hill race, having to hold it together as the track turned into greasy ruts during a complete downpour. "I heard and saw things out there that grown men shouldn't see or hear!" declared Senior B rider Larry Adams of the last laps. "It was grueling." Yet by the time the trophies were handed out, the sun was beginning to peek out from the clouds. During the first lap, Casey Cycle City/Factory Connection/Purple Power-sponsored Yamaha rider Jason Greer battled with Steve's Performance/Cycle Center/Jimmy's -Cycle T '44 MAY 29, 2002' cue • • Sales-backed Yamaha rider Ashley Hall, who got the holeshot. At the first checkpoint, Greer had the luck of getting a faster punch and Hall had to fall in behind Greer going into the supertight cut-over section. Hall rode with Greer for half a lap. By the time Greer came through the scoring tent, he had pulled a one-minute-and-45second lead on Hall. Greer continued to stretch his lead, thus taking the overall win at the finish. Hall gave a good chase, coming in second overall and taking the win in the AA class. Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A/Maximasponsored Kawasaki rider George Greer pulled up from a next-to-Iastplace start to battle with Gas Gas rider David Ashley for third overall. On the first lap, Greer latched on to Ashley's rear fender. Ashley bobbled in a comer and stalled the bike, giving Greer the opportunity to pass and take third place at the finish. In the 200cc A class, Ductmasters/Motorcycles £, More KTM rider Chance Baker took off of the line with the holeshot. Motor Imports/Zeke's Cycle Center-backed Kawasaki rider Timmy Craddock chased Baker during the first lap, with Cycle Conceptssponsored KTM rider Mike Lancaster right behind him. Craddock looped out with his front end up in the air on a slick uphill, giving Lancaster the chance to get by him. Lancaster almost caught Baker on a fire road during the fourth lap, but the pass attempt was foiled by some slippery mud and Lancaster went down, Baker n _ vv s kept up a fast pace to ta ke first at the barrels, and Lancaster recovered to take second. Craddock fought the mud and rain to take third. The victory in the 250cc A class would go to Gas Gas rider Randall Ellison after a back-and-forth battle with Cycleworld/SoCal/O'Nealbacked Suzuki rider Travis Williford. The two riders freight-trained for the first half of the race. During the fourth lap, Williford went head over heels on some slick roots, locking up bikes with Ellison. Ellison got untangled the quickest, taking the lead for the rest of the race. Williford got going again and came in second. Honda rider Chuck Hancock rode a consistent race to take third place. By the end of the first lap, Bruce's Suspension/Oakley-backed KTM rider Glenn Holcomb had a 15-second lead over Yamaha rider Montie Orr. By the end of the third lap, Orr caught sight of Holcomb, but he had to stop and pit. During the last laps of the race, decreased visibility hindered Orr's chances of catching Holcomb, and Holcomb took the win with a five-minute lead over second-placed Orr at the finish. Kawasaki rider Tommy Reynolds finished ahead of the rest of the pack to take third at the scoring tent. The Four-Stroke A class was packed with racing action. On the first lap, Sunrise Auto £, Cyclesbacked Yamaha rider Mike Capewell took control of the lead while Yamaha rider Andrew Williams and KTM rider Robert Wagner battled for second. Williams moved into second place and set a blistering pace to hunt down Capewell. On the second lap, Capewell let Williams by, and Williams spent the rest of the race ahead of the pack, taking first at the scoring tent. Meanwhile, Capewell and Wagner battled back and forth. On the last lap, Capewell got his front wheel crossed up on a big log at the top of the "Gravity Cavity" hill. Wagner got by Capewell to take second and Capewell recovered to take third. 1:1II Pipsico Boy SClIut lleserntion Sany, Virginia Results: April 21, 2002 (Round 31 O/A: Jason Greer (Yam). AA: 1.
