California Racing Club Ounestown Series Round 2: Starwest Motocross Park Brett Moscrop went 1-1 for the 250cc Noviceclass win at the second round of the California Racing Club Dunestown SerIes. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON MORENO VAllEY, CA, JI\AY 5 ound two of California Racing Club's 25th annual J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series headed south to the hard-pack layout of Starwest Motocross Park, where Honda-mounted Brett Moscrop proved to be unbeatable in the 250cc Novice class. In first-moto action, David Zahrt darted away with the holeshot over Moscrop, Bill Smith, Robert Warren and the rest of the field. Zahrt's lead lasted just over a lap before Moscrop got tired of riding in second place and shot into the lead. Smith reeled in Zahrt and dropped him back to third place a lap later. Moscrop, who usually competes in the 125cc Novice class, looked right at home on the bigger bike, and he stretched his lead to 10 seconds by time the checkers came out. Smith stayed ahead of Zahrt for second place, with Jason Monahan overcoming a poor start to climb to fourth, ahead of Warren. Ryan Reina edged out Moscrop for the second-moto holeshot, with Monahan getting a better start to run in third place, just ahead of Zahrt and Smith. Reina looked good during the first couple of laps, pulling away from Moscrop slightly. Everything changed a short time later when Reina grabbed a little too much throttle and got out of shape in the whoops and went down hard. Moscrop inherited the top spot, with Monahan starting to inch closer. By time the white flag came out, Monahan was all over Moscrop's back fender. Moscrop maintained his cool, picked his lines carefully and kept his TRE/Answer/Shoei/Pro Circuit/Bridgestonebacked Honda a couple of bike ill lengths ahead of Monahan for a sweep of the class. Monahan's runner-up performance in moto two gave him the edge in a three-way points tie with Zahrt (3-3) and Smith (2-4) for second overall. Chris Tocco was quickest out of the gate in the opening 125cc Pro moto to lead Jeff Eide, Shane Doughty and George LaMonte. Tocco was putting a second per lap on the pack up until the midway point, when Doughty upped the pace and started reeling in his fellow Yamaha rider. Doughty kept pushing and would close to within a couple of bike lengths of Tocco at the checkers. Third went to Eide, followed by LaMonte and Bob Tocco. Chris Tocco absconded with the second-moto holeshot, over LaMonte and Eide. By the completion of lap one, Eide had wrestled the lead away from Tocco. However, Tocco wasn't about to give up, and he stayed glued to Eide's back fender for the next five laps. Eide took the white flag with Tocco mere inches behind. Tocco hounded Eide relentlessly, finally slipping into the lead with just a couple of corners remaining. LaMonte finished third, behind Eide, with Bob Tocco coming across in fourth. Robbie Gatan and Anthony Barba- McClure won the war, as his 2-3 finishes topped the 5-2 score of Reina for the second-place trophy. Tye Hames and Ike Jost were all over each other in their battle over the 85cc (12-13) first-moto lead. At one point, they got a little too close in a turn and went down together. Jost was up the quickest and would continue on for the win, over Hames. Tanner Langham stayed out of the grasp of Nick Sanchez to finish fourth. The Team Green/O'Neal/ Scott-backed Jost was just about perfect in the second moto, going from gate to flag uncontested for the victory. Hames was again second, followed by Langham, Sanchez and Travis Bright. l:N Chris Tocco new to the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class victories at Starwest Motocross Parl<. covi traded the Schoolboy-class firstmoto lead back and forth briefly before Gatan pulled away for the win. Third went to Lance Gatan, with Brett Mountain and Aaron Graham finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Robbie Gatan went wire to wire for the second-moto win over his brother Lance. Graham and Mountain were just feet apart for most of the moto, with Mountain prevailing in the second moto to go 4-3 for third on the day. Lance Gatan returned to absolutely dominate the first 125cc Novice moto aboard his No Fear/Renthal/HRPsponsored Honda, taking the victory with 15 seconds to spare_ Starwest local Jeff McClure and Mountain went at it over second place for the entire race, with McClure coming out on top. Moscrop came from out of the pack to outduel Reina for a fourthplace finish. Reina put his YZ250F into a second-moto lead that would only last a handful of turns before Gatan dropped him to second place. Gatan slowly pulled away for a perfect 1-1 showing. McClure spent another moto fighting over second place, this time with Reina. Reina won the battle, but Robbie Galan finished third in the 125cc Intermediate contest and won the Schoolboy class in Moreno Valley.
