Dirty Ankle Hare Scrambles Gilleland Twists It and Cleans Up at the Dirty Ankle By JOHN JORDAN DIRTY ANKLE, NC, APR. 21 More than 275 riders braved the early-spring heat at round two of the North Carolina Hare Scrambles Association Championship Series, which was held in Dirty Ankle, North Carolina. Racetrack promoters Richard and Richie Clippard did an outstanding job of hosting rounds one and two of the NCHSA Series. Pro rider Jason Gilleland held off a laterace charge from last year's season champion, Aleo/Moose-sponsored Vance Earl, taking the overall win by just 19 seconds. Gilleland got a great start from the line, gaining crucial track advantage and a 15-secand lead by the end of lap one. Dust would playa considerable role in the race, making passing very difficult. Earl found himself back in the pack due to a first-turn pileup on lap one, but he was able to close to only 20 seconds behind by lap two. Gilleland was able to post consistent laps, with few mistakes, to hold on the overall win. Earl also stayed strong but was unable to close the gap at the end of two hours, taking second place overall. qaie Brown, Jeff Vealey and Doug Masencup rounded out the top five. First-round winner Patrick Hayes found himself in a five-rider battle for most of the race, which kept him out of contention for the win. Lee Thornburg took his second AA-c1ass win in a row by a commanding one-minute lead over second-placed John Jordan. David James found the right combination, getting the holeshot and leading through lap one. Jordan took the lead on lap two but would eventually give way on lap six to pressure from a hard-charging Thornburg, who then pulled away. Jordan recovered to finish second, and James held on for third. Justin Lee proved once again to be the fastest B-class rider in the field, posting a very impressive four-minute lead for the win in the 200cc B class and leading the B race overall by more than one minute. Chris Gosselin rode to a strong second-place overall finish in the B race while winning the 250cc B class. Brent Painther rode hard to win the overall in the Mini race, with Casey Miller finishing second. Seth Miller won the Senior Mini class and finished third overali in the Mini race. Women's class winner Shannon Keeter posted an impressive win by one full lap over first-round winner Wendy Charles, who finished second, ahead of third-placed Kelley Webb. Seven women posted results in this race, making for the largest women's class to date.
