in race two, but fell at the bottom of turn two. B riders Boutwell, Chris Scott, Matt Hamilton and Eric Odom created an awesome sight when all four were airborne over the infield triple at the same time. Up front, Homans used an inside pass over a double to take the lead from Scott and steadily pulled away for the win. Boutwell closed on Scott while Young reeled them both in. The race ended with Young catching Boutwell and Scott holding second. Tramel snared the first-moto holeshot in the 80cc D class and styled over the jumps on his way to the win. Starting second, Axel Love closed on Tramel by halfway but cased his Yamaha on the elevator jump, which subdued his charge. Number-two points rider Troy Balsters led moto two. Love tipped over in a tight left-hander and then cased the elevator again. Staying with Tramel the entire time, Balsters made an inside-pass attempt for the win in the stadium section on the last lap, with no success. After a midpack start, Brandon Devilbiss crossed the line third. Scott Mauler pulled the holeshot on his RM250 in the first Vet Over 40 moto, only to have John Smith power past on the first straight. The duo and Mike Hare pulled away from the field. Mauler regained the point in the whoops at the end of lap one and rode to a solid win. Hare picked up second. Smith found himself in a winning fight for third with KTM rider John Denton and Tim Smith. Smith led moto two until Mauler passed in the stadium section at the end of lap one. After moving to third, Hare went down hard in the stadium section and dropped to last. Mauler stretched his lead every lap over Smith. Denton turned in a great ride, holding off a group of three riders and placing third. A rider finally stepped up to challenge The Sports Center's Cole Boutwell in the Supermini ranks at County Line. Pensacola Motor Sports' Patrick Buell led the first moto, with Corey Patrick following. Boutwell moved to second up the elevator, then cut under Buell and took him high in a stadium-section berm. Buell's front wheel went over the edge and he took a soft fall. Boutwell went on to post a huge 45-second win. Patrick came under fire from Monell. Charging back from a second fall, Buell closed on Miller and James Devilbiss. Monell tagged Patrick for second, and Miller put a well-executed block on Buell to protect his fourth place. Again, Buell controlled the second-moto start, ahead of Monell, Miller and Patrick. Boutwell started sixth but moved to second on lap one and began to close the gap on Buell. 56 MAY 22, 2002 • 'c U c I e Boutwell went under him after the whoops; Buell clipped his rear wheel and went down. The field went past as Buell struggled to refire his machine. Boutwell styled with a cross-up over the finish line. Outside the top five in moto one, Destyn Patera rode to a second-place finish. Mid-AUantic Championship Cup Series - Expert Virginia International Raceway Bemisderfer Gets Stucky and Be'ggs By KEITH SHEARON DANVlllE,VA,APR.14 T im Bemisderfer took his Hondas to wins in three out of four major Expert races at VIR, leaving the Akrapovic GTU on the table. Bemisderfer claimed the GTO, Middleweight Supersport and the Speedscreen Grand Prix wins. Fred Stucky claimed the Akrapovic Exhaust GTU victory, using his Ducati 800 to surpass Bemisderfer, Rick Beggs and rookie Nate Kern. The term "rookie" is used because of the unusual circumstances that brought young Kern to be among the Expert riders after eight Daytona wins earlier this year. Kern so dominated his first visit as a CCS Amateur at Daytona that the Championship Cup Series bumped him out of the Amateur ranks. Kern's talent has also landed him several sponsors, such as KSA Consulting and the Hooters racing organization. Having had reasonable hopes for numerous 2002 Amateur-class championships, both Kern and Hooters are taking the season one weekend at a time, with plans to contest all 2002 Formula USA events as well as a number of CCS regionais. Judging by Kern's performance this weekend aboard his KSA Consulting Suzukis, his two second-place finishes, one third-place finish and one fourth-place finish, behind seasoned riders Bemisderfer, Stucky and Beggs, make for him an excellent start to the year. n _ _ !IS Bemisderfer has added new machinery to his arsenal this year, including 600F4 and 954 Hondas sponsored by Shenandoah Honda. Bemisderfer credits his own tuning and suspension work and Shenandoah's support for his potent combination. Stucky, on the Team ProMotionsponsored Ducatis, took Saturday's Akrapovic GTU win, Sunday's Middleweight Superbike win, and the SuperTwins race win, all on an 800cc Due - in all, a very respectable showing. Beggs is coming off a great 2001 season, with a track championship at Summit Point among his credits. Beggs is primarily supported from his own Fast Lane Cycles business, which also tunes for other riders. Snap-On tools also helps with the effort, giving substantial support. Ironically, Beggs brought a stockmotored Kawasaki 600 to take third in both the hotly contested Akrapovic GTU and Middleweight Supersport contests. This weekend's top race, the Speedscreen Expert GP, began Sunday afternoon as temperatures hit the mid-80s, with gusty winds. Sean Morris got something of a holeshot on the field as they passed the flag stand, and Chuck Juhasz was second away on the start. Moving down the front straight, that rocket from the fifth row was Tim Bemisderfer, who by turn two had snatched the lead from Morris. Josh Ratcliffe ran third and Beggs ran fourth. Down the front straight on lap two, Bemisderfer led Morris by two seconds from Ratcliffe and Beggs. Going into turn one, Beggs lagged on the brakes to pass Ratcliffe for third but apparently ran off course, handing third back to Ratcliffe and allowing Joe Ribeiro to take fourth. This would spell the end for Beggs, as he never made his way back to the front, despite continuing the race. On lap three, Bemisderfer had two seconds over Morris down the front straight, with Ratcliffe four second in arrears, followed by Ribeiro. By this time, Kern was working back to the front from his less-than-stellar frontrow start, making his way into sixth place in the short chute between three and four. Lap four found Bemisderfer five seconds ahead of Morris, with another five seconds back to Ratcliffe. Kern, now charging hard and haying made up three places in a single lap, caught Ratcliffe and made the pass going into turn one for third place.
