AMA Northwest Regional Loretta Lynn's Qualifier Clarks Branch Motocross Park Laughridge Times Four! Bv CLAV LIGHT ROSEBURG,OR,APR.27 uzuki rider Evan Laughridge's return to the Northwest was successful, as the Forest Ranch, California, rider scored one of the two fourclass win tallies on the day at the first of the three Northwest Region Loretta Lynn's qualifiers, held at Clarks Branch Motocross Park. Laughridge's wins came in the 125cc A, 125cc A/Pro-Sport, 250cc A and 250cc A/Pro-Sport classes. Riders from throughout the West were on hand for the event in southern Oregon, coming from Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Nevada. Only one other rider on the day matched Laughridge's impressive feat - Suzuki rider Matthew Beavers, who made the trek north from his S 64 MAY 22, 2002' cue I e home in Hemet, California, and decimated the competition in the 125cc and 250cc B Modified classes and 125cc Band 250cc B Stock classes. Beavers went eight for eight on the day, a mark that even Laughridge couldn't duplicate. Laughridge won all four motos in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes, but the Golden State rider would split moto wins in the 125cc and 250cc A/Pro-Sport classes with Tiger Lacey from nearby Wolf Creek, Oregon, who won the first moto in each class. However, the AMA Supercross and Arenacross phenom's day didn't progress as well as the talented teenager had hoped. Yamaha-mounted Ryan Huffman bolted to the head of the field at the start of the first 125cc A/Pro-Sport moto and spent most of the race in a heated confrontation with the Suzukin e _ s Clarks Branch Motocross Park: Suzuki jockey Tiger Lacey (21) split moto wins with Evan Laughridge in the 125cc and 250cc AlPro-Sport classes a1 the Loretta Lynn's qualifier in Roseburg, Oregon. Laughridge won both classes overall. mounted Lacey. Huffman held the point position for four laps before Lacey took command and remained there to the finish. Laughridge and Nevadan Nathan Tiearney also moved up in Huffman's demise, finishing second and third. Laughridge and Lacey led the field in moto two, but it was Laughridge who took the moto victory and, more importantly, the overall win by virtue of his 2-1 tally. Lacey (1-2) netted second, followed by Tierney (3-3) and Huffman (4-4). In the adjoined 125cc B Modified class, Beavers trailed the top four Professional riders to the finish in both motos to land the overall class win, followed by fellow Californian Eric McCrummen (2-2) and Nevada's Bobby Gamson (3-4). Klamath Falls, Oregon's Kevin Rookstool (5-3) was fourth overall. Suzuki riger Jayson Courser rounded out the top five via consistent 6-5 performances. Lacey and Laughridge waged war again in the 250cc A/Pro-Sport class. Lacey got around Laughridge on the fourth of six laps to grab the win. Laughridge finished second, ahead of Tiearney and another of the multitude of Californians on hand, Shawn Bushnell. Moto two, though, didn't go as well for Lacey; after getting around Tiearney on the second lap, Tiearney retaliated, and then Lacey slowed due to mechanical problems with one lap remaining and did not finish. While Laughridge pretty much had the overall in hand, he remained on the gas to post his second consecutive overall win via a 2-1 tally. Tiearney (3-2) and Bushnell (4-4) filled the top three overall. In both motos, Beavers worked his way amid the A/Pro-Sport riders to nab the overall B-class win, ahead of Gamson and Caleb Gosselaar, who by virtue of 4-3 finishes earned third overalL Laughridge had a much easier time taking his 125cc and 250cc A-class wins, as Yamaha rider Devin Watson finished second overall to Laughridge in both classes, although it was Beavers who trailed Laughridge at the finish in all four motos of the adjoined B classes. Huffman overcame his frustrating results from earlier in the day by dominating both Over 25 motos. Huffman's close friend and traveling companion Scott Allen trailed Huffman in the overall column after finishing second in moto two, although that position could be mostly attributed to a DNF on Bushnell's part. Oregon's Brian Syslo (5-3) rounded out the top three. One of the day's largest classes was the 85cc Modified (9-13) class. Washington's J.J. Niemi Jr. failed to top either of the two motos, but his 2-2 consistency netted the Suzuki rider from Castle Rock what was probably his biggest win of the year. Southern Oregon rider Byron Young and Suzuki-mounted Drew Gosselaar split moto wins in the class, although neither could put together doublemoto wins and finished the day in third and fourth overall, respectively. Nevadan Dustin Soule (3-3) placed second overalL Gosselaar also split moto wins in the competitive Supermini class with fellow Californian Cas Swift. Both riders would finish seventh in their other moto, enabling Washington's Chris Johnson to score the overall win aboard his Kawasaki with 2-2 finishes. Nevada's J.L Bitz (3-3) and Gosselaar (7-1) filled out the top three overall. Gosselaar's day, though, was salvaged by an overall win in the 85cc (12-13) Stock class.
