Mutant Motorsports Spring Series Round 1: Hollister Hills 6P htl! It's liar at Hollister BY RANDY HElM HOLUSTER,CA,APR.7 s winter leaves us, hopefully the rain will follow. Hollister Hills was the stage for the opening round of the Mutant Motorsports Spring Series, and there was plenty of action on the track as riders began the start of a new series. Little Vincent liar from Tracy, Califomia, came out swinging in the first round and walked away with the win in the 50cc (4-6) division via 1-1 scores. If liar can maintain finishes like this, he is well on his way to taking home the big series trophy. Aboard his Polini, liar had the early lead, with Romey Miramontes, also aboard a PoBni, hot on his heels, followed by Wesley Houle, who was riding the orange KTM. Fourth place was maintained by Paul Artan, also aboard a KTM. liar was keeping a safe distance from Miramontes, while Houle rode strong to keep third. By lap three, the top three were sorted out, whiel the battle for the fourth spot heated up. Fifth-place rider Justin Galtman found an extra burst of speed and managed to overtake Artan for the fourth spot going into the final lap. Meanwhile, liar kept the gas on to stretch out his lead over Miramontes, who was now a safe distance from third-placed Houle. liar charged all the way to the checkers to record the moto-one win, followed by a smooth-riding Miramontes in second. Houle kept the third spot, and Galtman remained in fourth, ahead of Artan in fifth. As the riders lined up for the second moto, the dads also took their marks behind their riders. The gate dropped, and liar emerged from the pack out front, with Miramontes again taking chase. As for the dads well, it was too close to call, but it seemed liar's dad earned the bragging rights of "fastest dad to the first turn!- Meanwhile, liar was using the same aggressive riding style that earned him the first-moto win to again stretch out his early lead in the second moto. Miramontes was charging hard in second but was not making up time on liar. In third was the lone Cobra rider, Robert Naterney out of Brentwood, followed by Artan in fourth. liar again kept the throttle pinned and put an exclamation point on his weekend of racing by recording his second moto win. Miramontes finished a 'solid second again, securing second overall for the weekend, A Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club: Mike McCrea takes the holeshot, in front of Billy Cooper and defending series champion Jeff Cregg, on his way to the overall victory at the opening round of the Stoney Lonesome Hare Scrambles Series in Columbus, Indiana. Yamaha-mounted Michael Smith moved into fifth place, and Jeff closed the gap on McCrea to four seconds by the first check on lap six. Cregg regained the lead before the next check, but McCrea fought back and the two riders swapped the top spot for two laps before McCrea took the lead for good on lap eight. Cregg stayed close finishing just four seconds behind McCrea, with Maschino third overall, 4 1/2 minutes back. With the top three overall coming from the Heavy A class, Cooper moved up to first place in class and fourth overall, in front of Michael Smith, with Chad Smith finishing third on a TM. Freeman claimed fourth place in the Heavy A class, with Colby Davis rounding out the top five. Gas Gas pilot Anthony Mullis took the early lead in the Light A class, in front of KTM rider Chris Taylor and Nathan Alering, on a MotoXtremes Yamaha, followed by Kawasaki jockey Billy Jannings and Douglas Gresham. Before the second check, Gresham moved into fourth place and KTM-mounted Christopher Bach moved up to fifth place. Bach passed Gresham for fourth place before the second check on lap two and continued to move up, finishing the lap in second place, in front of Taylor and Alering. Mullis lost the 40-second lead he had built early on the third lap, allowing Bach and Alering to start a threeway battle for the lead. Alering made the pass for the lead before the second check, and Mullis tallied a DNF before the end of the lap. Bach held second place, just four seconds back, with Taylor in third place, in front of Travis Troyer and TM rider Matt Findley. Alering and Bach continued the fight for the lead on lap four, swapping the top spot back and forth for four laps before Bach made a mis- 54 MAY 22, 2002' c: U c: • • take on lap seven, falling a minute and a half behind. Alering pulled away for the win, finishing sixth overall, in front of Bach. Troyer claimed third place, in front of Findley, with Taylor rounding out the top five. Johnny Robbins led the entire race for the win in the Veteran class, finishi.ng fifth overall on a Robbins Turbo Chargers KTM. The Heavy B class was the largest class, with 34 riders, and Rodney Frank took the lead before the end of the first lap for the win, finishing 23rd overall. Sean Young claimed the win in the Light B class, finishing 21 st overall after a back-and-forth battle the entire race with Gas Gas pilot Benjamin Nickless. Greg Prince led the entire race for the win in the Four-Stroke B class on a Honda, finishing 25th overall on a Don's Cycle/Peery's Honda. Patrick Flynn finished 24th overall, taking the win in the Senior class by just 49 seconds after a race-long battle with Robert Kirchner, on a VP Fuels/Thor Suzuki. Suzuki jockey Carl Pruett led the entire race for the win in the Super Senior class, and Brian Temple took the win in the C class after a great battle with Richard Herbert. Cody Schoettmer. n III _ SO while Naterney crossed the line in third. Naterney's finish was good enough to secure the third spot on the podium via his 6-3 moto scores. Artan came home fourth, which is where he also finished for the weekend with his 5-4 scores. As the big guns got ready for the start of the first 50cc Shaft moto, who knew it was going to be a riding lesson for the guys? Kayla Galtman of Gilroy dominated the first moto from start to finish. Galtman wound out the big-bore Yamaha for the holeshot and never looked back - except to see where second place was. And in that second spot was Steven Cancilla of San Jose, who was giving chase aboard his Honda. Third place was all Sam Moore, on the Yamaha. Cancilla was studying Galtman's lines but was not making any ground on her lead. Moore was maintaining a strong third over Scott Crane, who was holding down fourth. Galtman rode hard and kept it on two wheels to take the moto-one win! She was followed by Cancilla in second, Moore in third, and Crane in fourth. Cancilla edged out Galtman at the start of moto two, and the race was on! Third was being held by Moore and fourth was Crane. Apparently, Cancilla did his homework between motos and figured out what he needed to do to win the overall. This time around, it was Galtman's turn to follow the leader. Cancilla rode hard and maintained his lead to the checkers, with Galtman finishing a solid second, Moore in third, and Crane in fourth, which is where they finished overall, respectively. Hollister's own Josh Duppong (2-1) had a good weekend, edging out Preston Mull (1-2) for the overall victory in the 80cc (8-12) class. Shawn Murphy (3-2) took the third spot. Brian Johnson from Santa Cruz won the overall in the 250cc Beginner class via his consistent 3-2 moto scores, over Jim Zack (5-1) and Mark Lopez (2-4). Anthony Parks was smiling, too, after his win in the half-time jump contest. The Dash For Cash winners on this weekend were James Valesco on the mini, and Doug Schmid on the big bike.
