been the overall winner (via a 1-2
tally). while Thiessen would've had to
settle for second with a 3- 1 score. As
it was, however, Thiessen's clean
second-moto win was good enough
for the top spot on the day.
A similar scenario played out in
the 250cc Pro class, as top northern
Nevada Pros Ty Carson, Kenny Lash
and Justin Mastalka formed the top
tier of the division. These three found
their way to the front of the class in
both 10-lap motos and engaged in
some of the most impressive racing
of the day.
In the first moto, Carson took his
KTM 400 to the front for the win. It's
been a while since the local
Nevadans have seen much of Carson,
as he's been spending his weekends
sharpening his talents at the Western
Four-Stroke Nationals recently. Lash
put another four-stroke in the top
three by finishing second in the moto,
while Yamaha-mounted Mastalka
grabbed the third spot.
The second moto was an exact
reversal, as this time it was Mastalka
who was able to secure the victory.
Lash again posted second, while Carson overcame difficulties to manage
third. Just as in the 250cc Juniors,
three riders ended up at the top of the
standings with four points apiece, but
it was Mastalka's second-moto win
that gave him the nod for the overall
victory. Lash secured second on the
day by virtue of his 2-2 postings,
while Carson landed in third via a 1-3
tally.
It should be noted that Mastalka
also topped the 125cc Pros with a 1-1
tally, earning himself an impressive
Pro-class sweep on the day.
The Lovelock Motocross Association ended up hosting its biggest
turnout ever on this day, with an
entry count of 320 riders. The serpentine desert course held up well
and provided a change of scenery, in
terms of track layout, compared to
some of the other northern Nevada
tracks. Tufa Motorsports Park is only
18 months old, and if the expansion
in the northern Nevada motocross
scene continues as it has recently,
the circuit will be in for even more
growth in the near future.
The series is set to conclude in one
week at Honey Lake Motocross Park
in Milford, California.

Mesquite Raceway
Wild West Williams
By DICK GOODWIN
MESQUITE, NV. MAR. 30-31
The opening rounds of the la-race Western
Power Sports Wild West Nationals were held at
Mesquite Raceway in Mesquite, Nevada, on
March 30 and 31. A huge turnout on opening
day produced some great racing. In the
Supennini class, Suzuki's Benl Williams dominated a fast field with hard racing and stylish
moves.
Williams shot off the line to lead Brady
Powell and Tracon Kirk as race one exploded
into action. Daniel Johnson was making the
early moves, charging into second and glueing himself to William's rear fender. Williams
upped the pace, and by the midpoint of the
long race he had built a sizable lead on Johnson, Powell and the rest of the field. The main
scrap was over fourth, with Kirk, Jerad Butler
and Jeremy O'Driscoll banging on each other
for most of the race. Williams won the first half
comfortably, ahead of Johnson and Powell.
O'Driscoll emerged from the wars to claim
fourth.
Hoping to repeat his first-mota heroics,
Williams snapped another holeshot to start the
second stanza. Butler and Powell were right
behind him. Johnson, the only racer able to
match William's blazing speed, quickly muscled his way into second, and the chase was
on! The two front-runners quickly separated
themselves from the pack, as their intense
duel was fueling their ever-increasing pace.
Johnson was pushing hard, but Williams
woudn't crack, and the two of them were
putting on quite a show. A Iittie further back.
Powell and Butler were in a rowdy battle for
third. At the checkers, Williams edged out
Johnson for his second straight wire-to-wirewin, and the overall Supermini crown. Johnson took second overall. ahead of Powell and
Butler.
Daniel Johnson was also competing in the
125cc B Intermediate race - a big, strong
class. David Panzer leaped off the gate to lead
race one, but Jake Christensen jumped him in
the first tum. Dustin Moses and Travis Clifton
were racing in the lead pack, as Kyle
Kubitschek was working his way toward the
front. After muscling into second. Kubitschek
went at it with Christensen for about a lap until
making the pass in the back section. That was
it. as Kubitschek pulled away from there to an
easy win. Moses and Johnson brawled for
third, which was eventualJy won by Johnson.
Later in the race, Clifton came on strong to
gamer fourth.
Moses shot out in front of moto two, only
to take a soil semple end leave the clean air to
Christensen. Kubitschek, expecting a shorter
race this time, struck quickly for the lead.
Steven Alba jumped all over Christensen, and
they played pass-and-repass in a hot scrap for
second. It was all Kubitschek. once again, as
he stormed home for the win and the overall
125cc B Intermediate crown. Christensen
fended off all challenges for second, and
Johnson earned a hard-fought third overall.
