.---------=---------------------,0:: ~ 0::: 0: > :5 i:i ~ Corey Kandefer flies solo en route to back-ta-back moto wins and the overall 16-24 Combined victory at round two of Western New York Motocross Association Inc. racing action in Rock Glen, New York. York. Apparently Kandefer was looking to expand the riding classes he gives for a fee at Batavia Motocross Park to include free lessons at Silver Springs on this day. It was all Bradley and Waif could do to keep Kandefer in sight and wait for opportunity to knock while trying to learn his lines. Moto two saw bikes six wide and six deep, with everyone looking to take that all-important holeshot. When the dust settled, Suzuki jockey Matt Morgan and Yamaha-mounted James Warrick had the edge over a gaggle of other riders that left motoone second-place finisher and top contender Justin Bradley eating New York terra firma and in last place. On lap two, Kawasaki rider Joshua Utberg and moto-one winner Kandefer both managed to pass Warrick for second and third place. Kandefer made short work of Utberg and started to reel in Morgan. As the Suzuki jockeys battled, Kandefer not only made a clean block-pass on Morgan in front of all the spectators, but he now had a quick six-second lead on him. A great side-by-side moto battle ensued, and on the final lap Utberg made the pass stick on Morgan across the finish line for second place. Kandefer finished first overall with back-to-back moto wins. Bradley and Waif failed to back up their moto-one second- and thirdplace finishes. This earned Warrick second overall with moto finishes of fifth and fourth, and rider Jeremiah Ranck third overall with moto finishes of fourth and seventh. With 40 riders overflowing the starting gate, consistency was the key to these overall finishes. Last week, number-one WNYMA rider Bill Silvarole dominated three classes, winning all six of his motos in the 250cc Open Expert, Over 25 A and Vet classes on an extremely 70 MAy 15, 2002' c u e I _ challenging Frozen Ocean track at round one. The question this week was, Could Silvarole repeat the threepeat on a very fast Silver Springs track at round number two? The answer was an emphatic YESl Don Schmidt powered his Yamaha to finish second to Silvarole in all four motos in which he faced him. Schmidt will surely make this a very close class in this 30-race series, while experienced riders such as Paul Austin and Brandon Kuhn look to capitalize on any mistake by Silva role or Schmidt. Brett McMichael won three out of his four motos in the 50cc Pee Wee (4-8) Stock and 51cc (7-8) classes last week. This week he improved on that count. McMichael's powered his 50cc KTM and 51cc-plus Yamaha to wins in four out of four of his motos on this day, taking the 2002 season's first-place standings in these two classes. Yamaha rider Conner Kelly was unable to back up his first-moto finishes of second in the 50cc Pee Wee (4-8) Stock class and a thirdplace finish aboard his KTM in the 51cc (7-8) class. As the season wears on, look for Kelly to challenge McMichael at every track on the WNYMA circuit. Also, be aware of the very fast KTMs of Jason Chacho and Pascal Schmitt, as either of these young riders could easily win on any given Sunday. As darkness approached and the smell of open campfires and twostrokers faded, so did the end of this perfect race day. Over the next month, Silver Springs Racing Inc. will expand their top-notch racing facility to include a brand-new stadiumcross track. Next season, maybe - just maybe - we'll have a Western New York Stadiumcross Association series, promoting fun and good motorcycle racing for all to enjoy on Saturday nights. l:1li n _ _ .. MXWest Spri gSeries Round 7: Tufa Motorsports Part Thiessen Thumps to Lovelock Victory By ROBERT BEAUPRE LOVELOCK, NV,APR. 21 T he MXWest Spring Series is finally coming down to the Wire, and It was evident at the seventh meeting of the eight-round happening, held at Tufa Motorsports Park in Lovelock, Nevada. Riders could be seen staring intently at the points standings, carefully calculating the numbers needed for them to move up a spot or two. Even with that in mind, though, few racers on the track looked as though they were "riding for points." Of course, it isn't easy to perform point calculations while out on the track, so it seemed that most simply fell back on the strategy that probably works the best anyhow: Ride hard now; do the math later. In the 250cc Junior ranks, any attempts at points-tallying during the motos would have been a wasted effort, as the positions seemed to change drastically by the minute. The top group rode at fairly similar speeds, and it wasn't unusual to see five riders battling for the same spot at any time or place on the track. Up front, Greg Thiessen rode his CRF450 to the top of the overall standings with a 3-1 score. Two riders managed to tie him on points, as Nate Jensen, who scored 2-2, and Ryan Noranjo, who posted a 1-3 tally, came in second and third on the day, respectively. After posting a third in the first moto, Thiessen pulled a decent start in the second round and was able to move past early leader Joe Pomeroy after a couple of laps. He used his early advantage to establish a healthy lead by the midway point. Behind him, though, midpack starters (and first-moto one-two finishers) Noranjo and Jensen found their way past Pomeroy and began to wage their own battle for second. Jensen held the spot initially but stalled in a tight turn on the last lap, allowing Noranjo into the second spot. Jensen restarted quickly, though, and made a final push that put him back in second in the final moments, where he finished a few seconds behind Thiessen and just ahead of Noranjo. Interestingly, had Jensen not made the last-lap pass for second, Noranjo would've ,..---------------, .... it ::> ~ '" Ii: w ~ i:i ~ Q.
