fmger and it popped shut and caught my glove, so I couldn't get my hand out. My dad had to hold it open while I got my hand out. That's about how my day went, though." Shaw had no such problems, as he rolled through the nasty conditions and lapped traffic to take the win. After finishing in the runner-up position many times during the 2001 campaign, Shaw has now gotten that elusive first win and, in doing so, has taken over the series points lead. Thiele held on for the second position with a minute to spare over Nesbitt, who had a late-race dice with Duncan in the battle for third. Roth was able to overtake Wuebbeling on the final lap to round out the top five. Caleb Wohletz took his second Aclass victory of the year by steadily moving forward all race long. After finishing lap one in fifth place, the 17-year-old rider moved up one position per lap, ultimately taking the lead on the final lap aboard his Letko Cycles/Axo/Michelin KTM 200. Matteson, who held the lead for much of the event, bobbled on the alI-important last lap and gave up his chance at victory. Finishing in third, on another KTM, was Hansen's Energy Drink/Devol Engineering-backed Tracy Bauman, who rounded out the top 10 overall. At the end of the day, most riders were happy to be going home. The bikes were heavy with the sticky clay and there were a lot of tired faces. Of the entered riders, 36 percent failed to make even one lap around the tough circuit, and only 42 percent were able to claim the checkered flag at the end of the two-hour torture test. Now they have a year to prepare for Finger Lakes 2003. eN BUDDS CREEK, MD, APR. 7 fter the deluge that was Chestnut Mountain (round one of the series), riders rejoiced as they woke up to sunny, chilly weather for the Blue-Grey 100, round two of the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series. More than 400 riders lined up at the starting gates of Budds Creek Motocross Park to take on a 7 -mile track that included the national-caliber motocross track, a dirt-track oval, and miles of wide-open woods trails. The Blue-Grey is one of the series' most popular races, but the big crowds created interesting traffic issues on the course for the faster riders. Casey Cycle City/Chick-filA/Yamaha-sponsored rider Jason Greer took the holeshot and plunged down the first hill ahead of the rest of the AA pack. Steve's Performance Yamaha rider Ashley Hall, Scotti MSR/TriCity KTM rider Stephen Edmondson, and Gas Gas/Alco/ Answer-backed Daniel Morrison gave pursuit, but Greer was out of sight by A 62 MAY 15, 2002' c u e • .. ~ :I: ~ ~ :I: Q. Greer finished with a lead of just under a minute to take the overall. "This was a fun course, and it has always been one of my favorites: commented Greer. "The hardest part was getting around the 300-plus lappers." Edmondson trailed seconds behind Greer during the first lap but was passed by Hall on the second. Hall stayed in second place to the finish line. Meanwhile, Edmondson and Morrison battled for third, with Edmondson coming in mere seconds ahead of Morrison at the checkers to take the spot. In the 200cc A class, Zeke's Cycle Center Kawasaki rider Timmy Craddock beat the rest of the pack to the first turn on the motocross track but then took a spill. Cycle Concepts KTM rider Mike Lancaster led until the second lap, when he made contact with a lapped rider who had flipped down a hill. Havoline/Zeke's Cycle Center-sponsored Kawasaki rider R.J. Ferguson took over the lead. Ferguson was chased by Husqvarna rider Wallace Palmer, and n _ .. s Budds Creek Motocross Park: Jason Greer salls over a tabletop at the Blue-Grey 100, round two of the Virginia Championship Hare SCrambles Series, in Budds Creek, Maryland. Palmer found his chance to pass Ferguson when the two came up on a pack of slower riders. Wallace took a smoother line around the pack, making the winning pass on Ferguson. Wallace took the win and Ferguson came through the scoring tent in second. Meanwhile, Ductmasters/Motorcycles £, More KTM rider Chance Baker made his way up from fourth to take third place at the finish. Cycleworld/O'NeaI/SoCal-backed Suzuki rider Travis Williford worked his way up from a dead-last start to battle with Bruce's Suspension-sponsored KTM rider Chris Taylor for the lead. On the last lap, Taylor passed Williford right within sight of the scoring tent to take the win. Williford came in right on his rear fender for second place. Motorcycle Factory Inc.-sponsored Honda rider Matthew Louderback came in a minute behind Williford to take third. The forecast for the 2002 Senior A class is fast racing and tight competition throughout the season, as was proved at this particular race. Motor Imports Kawasaki rider Daniel Morrison shot out of the gates ahead of the pack. Mcintire Construction-backed Yamaha rider Mike Mcintire was the first to dive into the woods, but he nailed something on the trail. Morrison got by to take a first-lap lead, with Mcintire and Cycle Connection KTM rider Darryl Campbell right behind him. During the second lap, Mcintire and Campbell got by Morrison. Mcintire and Campbell battled on the motocross track, with Mcintire taking the lead, staying just seconds ahead of Campbell. Then Campbell pulled up beside Mcintire on the dirt oval but had to close in on his rear fender going back into the woods. Mcintire took the win, with Campbell right behind him for second. Morrison took third at the finish. The Mini/Masters/Women's event had just under a hundred riders lined up at the gates to race a 3.5-mile version of the main course. Cycle Junction/Alpinestars/Motorider.combacked Kawasaki rider Preston Blake took the Mini A win and the overall win. The Women's class broke a VHCSS record, with 18 riders lined up at the gates, but three-time class champion Jessica Morrison maintained her style of staying minutes ahead of the pack to take the win on her Kawasaki. eN Budds Creek MX Plrte Budds Creek, Maryland Results: April 7, 2002 [Round 21 O/A: Joson Greer (Yom).
