way up to third by the halfway mark. Lewis and Taylor were running on the same second, with Lewis tenaciously holcJjng on to the point. Smail slowly (once again) began to close on the leaders, and soon the battle was a threeway affair. Smail had some good Jines in the back canyon section of the course, and he used them to move forward. First he got around Taylor, and on the next lap he went past Lewis to take over the lead. Once out front, Smail was able to gradually put some distance on Lewis, who now rode in second place. When the checkered flag came out, Smail rode in first to complete his perfect 1-1 day and seal up the overall win. Lewis (3-2) took second overall, while Taylor (3-2) finished up in third. Tyler (4-5) came in fourth, while Kuebler (6-4) filled out the top five slots on the day. Results 80 BEG; I. lac Clark (Suz); 2. Billy Musgrave (Yam); 3. DakOCll T~ (Yam); 4 My~ Tedder (Yam); 5. Firebird Raceway Ledesma Does the Deed By JYlJCHAEL Ross CHANDLER, AZ, APR. 13-14 It came as quite a shock to see Mark Ledesma racing a Honda after so many successful seasons riding his Kawasaki ZX7, but Ledesma showed up at the Firebird East track with a CBR600F4 and handily beat the talent-laden , Unlimited GP field and took home the $500 first·prize money. Giving up at least 50 hp to the GSX-R 1000 of Lenny Beckman, Ledesma outbraked the Suzuki rider, who made a small mistake in the final tum before the straightaway on lap three, opening the door for Ledesma to take a lead he would never relinquish. Ledesma went on to win by 3.910 seconds over another 600, ridden by Robb Martin. "I wanted to prove that a 600 can win Unlimited GP," said Ledesma. "First off, I want to thank God for giving me the ability to win, and then my crew, who worked hard on the bike after a crash yesterday, and then Dale Keiffer of Racer's Edge, who gave me a great set of Michelin tires." Although it looked easy, Ledesma's win came at tI high price. He crashed hard on Sat· urday morning when he tangled with Daryl Woodward in the Middleweight GP race, injuring his shoulder - and his bike, which required extensive repairs to get it ready for Sunday's events. Ledesma would crash again on Sun· day after Unlimited GP, this time while leading the Middleweight Supersport race. Although unhurt, his bike was heavily damaged again. Martin had a tough time all weekend trying to track down a front-end chatter on his GSX-R600, which he intended to ride since Suzuki money was available for this race, but the rider from Prescott, Arizona, couldn't get his Suzuki set up in time, so he switched to his Yamaha R6 and took second overall in the Unlimited GP race. "It's been a stressful weekend," explained Martin after the race. "J'm not having any luck with the GSX-R setup today, but the R6 seems to be working well. I plan to do some AMA races this season and to run some Formula USA events as well. I want to thank Dale Kieffer, because he helped me a lot this weekend." Scott Jensen had a great battle going with Vincent Haskovec and managed to take third. IEarly leader Beckman held on for fifth after getting into a fracas with Martin and running off the track. "I was racing with Martin and we both went into tum one sideways," Beckman reported. "I uess he wanted it more than me, 'cause he idn't leave me any racetrack and I went off."
