Pelly held second, with Mark Thomas third. Petty wasted no time and took the lead. Thomas and Mike Reilly were now putting pressure on Buecker. Thomas passed Buecker through the rhythm section and set his sights on Petty. Thomas caught Petty by the halfway mark but never made an attempt to pass. The two finished in that order. Buecker lost one more spot to Reilly, as Terry Gill moved up to fifth. Petty grabbed the lead in moto two, with Buecker and Thomas behind him. The three were nose to tail, waiting for one another to make a mistake. Buecker finally dropped back to third, and Petty and Thomas finished a close one-two. Ron Twilley started fourth and fought off Gill for that spot at the checkered flag. Results P/W OIL-INJ: I. ZIlch Hams (Yam): 2. Josh Theus (Yam): 3. Tyler PO'ft1I (Yam): 4. Spencer Kirton (Yam): 5. Glen Helen Raceway Park Smail's Pace By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 13 With the White Brothers' World Four-Stroke Championships taking place the following day, this week's Racing Enterprises Motorsports Saturday 'motocross featured a huge turnout for the special 150cc Four-Stroke Challenge, as many riders were looking to get in some last-minute tuning of bikes and bod~ ies before their "big" races on Sunday. A look down the starting line in this race revealed a range of exotica that is staggeringj some of these four-stroke minibikes are so trick that the term "works bike" is not inappropriate. In moto one, Lance Smail grabbed the holeshot, and with a sound more reminiscent of lawn mowers than motocross bikes, the pack of 28 other racers gave chase. While trick, these bikes do not feature engines with exhaust notes that "bark," by any stretch of the imagination. Smail was able to put a twosecond gap on the field by the end of lap two. Rich Taylor was in second place, with Cycle World's Jimmy Lewis holding down third. Scoll Tyler ran fourth, while Randy Skinner mercilessly flogged his "underpowered" Honda 100 up into fifth place. As the moto wore on, Smail was able to slowly (as most things in this race seemed to happen) Inch away from the pack, and by the end he was nearly 10 seconds out front. Taylor rode in second place, with Lewis in third. Tyler and Skinner filled out the top five positions. When the gates went down for moto two, Lewis snared the holeshot, with Larry Kueble running second, just ahead of Taylor. Tyle again gated well and he ran fourth, whil Justin Herrman put some blue up front, as h had his Yamaha in fifth place. Out front, Lewi was feeling pressure, as Taylor moved up int second place and began to badger the leader Smail started outside the top 10 but, afte putting on an exhibition in maintainin momentum by keeping the throttle pinned, h passed riders in groups and had moved all th (JllW); 4. North Florida MX Park Gooch Grinds Out a Win By CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN HIlliARD, FL APR. 6 At the first round of the Florida/Georgia Spring Series, Jordan Goo<:h ground out a win in the 125cc C class. The double-moto winner also competed in the heavily contested 16-29 class and came out with fourth overall. The day was sunny, with temperatures around 80. and the riders were hungry to get the series started between NFMX and Alma Motocross Park in Georgia. The first combined 125cc Band C moto got under way with Eric Usher leading the way. Gooch held second, and Nathan Vick and Brad Christopher followed. Jeffrey Tyson was in fifth. Usher and Gooch pulled away from the others, as a battle for third started. Christopher and Tyson finally got around Vlck for third on the last lap. In the second moto, Usher pulled another holeshot, only to find himself on the ground. Gooch took command, and Tyson was now in second. Christopher and Mark Hawley held fourth and fifth. Usher passed Tyson before the white flag flew, but Gooch was long gone. Tyson held off Christopher for second in the 125cc C class, as Hawley stopped all of Perry Kirton's advances for the next place. The fastest class of the day was the 16-29 class. David Brewer led the hungry field Into tum one in the first moto. Usher was second, followed by Lee Tatham, Gooch and Dustin McKenzie. Usher started pUlling pressure on Brewer, and Tatham was close behind in third. 70 MAY 8, 2002' Glue I e Glen Helen Raceway Parle Eventual overall winner Lance Small (1) and third-place finisher Rich Taylor (to Small's left) launch off the line In the second 150Cc Four-Stroke Challenge moto In San Bernardino, California. n e _ s
