ceeded to step out on the rest of the
class, to the tune of 10 seconds over
the battle for second place. Honda
rider Fred Roy now challenged Kuhn
bar to bar for second. When Kuhn
lost his groove again coming into tum
two, both Roy and Yamaha rider
Eddie Van Ballegooyen got by him.
Kuhn never gave up searching for a
faster line on the technically challenging track and soon had his
groove back, passing Van Ballegooyen on the final lap to finish third.
Roy had found another fast line and
was now laying down lap times comparable to the 125cc Experts' firstmoto winner, Nighman - setting the
stage for a second-moto shootout for
sure, as the top four riders found their
groove in the loamy soil.
In the second 125cc Expert moto,
Kuhn again took the holeshot and led
for good this time. As Roy and Nighman dueled for second place, Kuhn
was hooked up and stepping out.
Nighman was forced to run a less
aggressive second moto, as he waited
for Kuhn to slip up again whHe still
protecting what would be his firstand now second-place motos of the
day to capture the first 125cc Expert
first-overall finish of 2002. Roy
pushed his Honda as far as he could
but never found a line as fast as the
one in which Nighman was now running his Kawasaki. Kuhn won the
second and final 125cc Expert moto
of the day by just over 10 seconds,
improving on his first-moto finish of
third and ending the day second
overall. Roy, who made the trip down
from Alcove, Canada, made the day
payoff with second- and thjrd-place
moto firushes for third overall.
KTM rider Brett McMichael was
well-prepared for the 50cc Pee Wee
(4-8) and 50cc (7-8) classes.
McMichael captured the very first
50cc holeshot of 2002 and went on to
win three of his four motos. Only
Cobra rider Adam Miles was able to
best McMichael on the day, with a
win in the second 50cc (7-8) moto,
which was good for second overall.
Connor Kelly had hjs KTM dialed in,
posting third- and second-place moto
finishes to McMichael and ending up
second overall in the 50cc Pee Wee
(4-8) class.
Another display of early-season
dominance was shown by Bill Silvarole, who won an incredjble six out of
six motos on the day. Silvarole finished first overall in the Vet, Over 25
A and Open Expert classes. However,
Honda rider Don Schmjdt appears to
be a strong contender; he took two
second-place finishes in the Over 25
A class and finjshed third and fourth
in the Open Expert class. Silva role
set the pace of the day with lap times
under 2: 12 on a very challenging
track.
