Boutwell went back out front with an inside pass. Cole Studstill put his Yamaha fourstroke into third. Spann retook the lead in the whoops. The pair flew side by side over the infield triple. Boutwell found a way back around Spann on the white-flag lap. With only two turns to go, a clean-riding Spann held back on a block-pass, giving Boutwell the win. Studstill and Allen came in next. Spann didn't cut anyone any slack in race two and led from start to finish. Boutwell stumbled in an off-camber turn and dropped to fourth. Studstill stayed in contact with Spann the entire distance for second. Boutwell moved into third, first Youth rider, with a downhill pass on Allen on the final lap. Boutwell snared the holeshot in the first 125cc B/C moto, ahead of Matt Hamilton and Jeremy Carroll. A pass over the elevator put Carroll in second. The trio cleared the 90-foot double, named "Hoss." Boutwell pulled away for a 20-second win. Hamilton closed in on Carroll at the halfway point and then settled for third. Bruce Key, the first Crider, placed fourth, ahead of Kawasaki-mounted Doug McCoy. Boutwell led race two from start to finish. Hamilton kept the heat on Carroll. On the last lap, he bobbled going up the elevator and Hamilton snatched second. Also on the last lap, McCoy tagged Key over the elevator for the lead in the C class. Key stayed close and grabbed a photofinish victory over the final jump. On the separate Pee Wee track, the 70cc/90cc class had a full gate. Honda riders Jeff Pittman, Thomas Lau and Jordan Williams led the way in race one. The top two pulled away as Ryan Bell worked his way through the pack. At the end of lap three, Pittman washed out and Lau rode past for the win. Five riders fought over second, with Williams getting the nod. Pittman recovered for third, over Yamaha-mounted David Copeland. Bell's momentum slowed; he placed sixth. Lau led race two from wire to wire, although lappers allowed Pittman to get close at the end. Bell turned things around with a solid third. Copeland was fourth again. D.J. Oakes went I-I in the Pee Wee Umited class aboard his Yamaha. He led race one, with Stephen Donaldson and Wesly Mayo in tow. Ben Lau moved to third and began to pressure Donaldson, but then he fell, handing third back to Mayo. A strong second-moto holes hot allowed Oakes to ride his own race to Aonla Pa•• Motorplex: Defending Champion Peggy Cozart rode her 1974 Honda to the Women's Expert win at the third round of the AHRMAlSpeed & Sport National Vintage MX Series in Washington, Georgia. Benolkin Heads 'em Off at the Pass Bv GARV CRIDER WASHINGTON, GA, MAR. 24 ormer Kawasaki factory rider Tom Benolkin blasted to perfect scores in the Over-40 Expert and Sportsman 250cc Expert classes at Aonia Pass Motorplex, site of round three of the 15th annual AHRMA National Vintage MX Series. Sunday's motocross was the final event in AHRMA's "triple-national weekend" at the Aonia Pass facility. The H&H KTM Cross-Country National and the Speed & Sport Trials National were held on Saturday. More than 200 entries from 21 states turned out to compete in the 42 MX classes offered by the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. There was a delightful variety of machinery to be seen on the track. And there was plenty of close racing, too. Amenities at Aonia have been upgraded to include hook-ups, hot showers and a bike-wash area. Several members of the Poole family of California collected multiple trophies. Richard Poole was at the head of the family table, with overall wins in both the Premier and Classic divisions of 500cc Expert competition. Michigan's Corky Root finished third aboard his 1961 Greeves in the Premier Lightweight Expert class and third again on a 1961 BSA in the Premier 500cc Expert division. Root then switched to his 1974 Bultaco and won the Over 60 Expert class in a close match over Jean Ramsay. The oldest bike entered was a 1958 AJS four-stroke, piloted by Graham Foster to a fourth-place fin- F Due •• ish in the Premier 500cc Expert class. Meanwhile, AHRMA's off-road director, David Boydstun, rode his rare 1966 Cotton to a perfect score in the Premier Lightweight Expert division. Georgia's own Peggy Cozart, three-time AHRMA Women's Expert National MX Champion, was clearly a crowd favorite. Cozart aced the Women's division and went on to claim fifth overall in the Sportsman 125cc Intermediate class. Minnesota resident Tom Benolkin was a Kawasaki factory MX team rider during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Injuries suffered in 1983 forced him into early retirement. Now 43 years old, Benolkin is ready to race again. "I never won a championship," said Benolkin, "and this [AHRMA Series] is my chance." Series points leader Benolkin scorched the track en route to runaway moto wins in the Over 40 and Sportsman 250cc Expert divisions. Benolkin's main series rival, Brad Lackey, was signed up in the Over 40 class but did not show, reportedly due a case of the flu. H&H KTM owner Barry Higgins led both Over 50 Expert motos from start to finish aboard his red 1973 Maico. Ohio's Jimmy JerJes, on a similar Maico, kept within striking distance of Higgins, but Jerles had to settle for second both times. Robert Poole was third. JerJes returned in the hotly contested Sportsman 500cc Expert class. On the final lap of the opening moto, race leader Chris Richardson and Jerles traded blows, but Richardson held on for the moto win. In moto two, Jerles had the initial lead, but Tom n e _ so • MAV 8, 2002 45
