battle for second place between Forren Charma and Liz Huddleston went down to the wire, with Huddleston edging out Charma for the second spot. Trevor Turner took the win in the last race of the day, the Unclassified contest, which is open to all Beginners and Amateurs on any type of machine. The Expert class was greeted by a cold, northwest wind that dropped the temperature into the ski-jacket zone. However, the racing action would provide plenty of heat for 60 minutes as they attacked the 5-mile racecourse. Jason Garberg and his No Fear-backed Honda were the first to leave the line, with Emery Woolsey in hot pursuit on hjs Kawasaki. Woolsey challenged for the lead early on and paid the price. "I thought I could outbrake him and take him on the inside, but the track drops off in that corner, so I rode my front wheel instead till the ground hit me," said Woolsey, who remounted in seventh place. Scott Gibson took advantage of Woolsey's mishap and roared into second place aboard his Yamaha YZ250F thumper and put some daylight on third place. "' haven't been riding a lot," Gibson admitted, "so I thought I should try and catch Garberg and crash or ride smart for a change and try to keep second." Woolsey had different plans, though; he had worked his way back up to third and was waiting for a mistake from Gibson. The three leaders distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, with Garberg gaining ground each lap, as he was the only rider jumping across a steep, open coulee. The battle back in the pack raged on as the poor starters fought their way to the front. In fourth place, Suzuki rider Russ Warren was being shadowed by Yamaha-mounted Shaun Hudson. Not far behind were Honda riders Jon Ludlum and Shawn Mitchell, who came off the line last; the close racing went handlebar to handlebar down to the finish. Friends and family cheered as Garberg came in for the checkered flag nearly a half-minute ahead of second-place finisher Gibson, who was followed by Woolsey, Warren and Hudson. "I can't remember when I had a day like this," said Garberg. "My Honda ran great, I got a fantastic start and I rode hard the whole way, and my friends were at the finish! What a day!"
