This was Krogstadt's first outing after being sidelined by a wrist injury this winter. More than 700 gates dropped with riders in them at rounds three and four of Pacific Racing Organization's Northwest National Motocross Spring Series. The Extreme Motosports crew had the track in great shape, with multiple lines available. An international group of riders from Canada, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and yes, even Fairbanks, Alaska, came to run and gun in the wind. Racers finished under the lights on the supercross version of the track for the last motos. Krogstadt and Alaskan Pro rider Jerry Lymburner set high marks for entertainment in the 125cc Pro races. On Saturday, Lymburner got out in front in moto one, and Krogstadt couldn't catch up, but in moto two Krogstadt got the holeshot and was running fast. Krogstadt found the only sand in Spokane and washed out, letting Lymburner by. Krogstadt came back and made a textbook blockpass on Lymburner, but Lymburner was too fast and caught Krogstadt in the back section for the win. Sunday saw the same two going at it again, with Lymburner and Krogstadt swapping leads numerous times. Lymburner made an impressive recovery after swapping ends for 50 yards in the whoop section. Lymburner overshot the corner and parked it in the S 56 MAY 8, 2002' eye • • berm, letting Krogstadt by, but the kid from Alaska got back on the track and wore Krogstadt down for a welldeserved win. The aggressive riding by these two was always clean and great fun to watch. Krogstadt was untouchable in the 250cc Pro class, winning every moto. Kyle "Vertical" Versteeg had a great first time out on a bone-stock Honda in the 250cc Intermediate races. "Yeah, it's really stock," Versteeg said, "even down to the handlebars." Versteeg went 1 and 1 on Saturday, and 4 and 1 on Sunday. A twogate staggered start had the Intermediate riders behind the Pros. Versteeg outpaced the Intermediates and was picking off Pro riders like a sniper. Only one Pro beat Versteeg to the finish line. Ryan Dunn took first overall in the exceptionally fast 125cc Junior class on Saturday, and Lee Hall was first overall on Sunday. Shawn Wilson placed third in his return after an injury-plagued season. Some of the best racing of both days was any 80cc race with the DeAtley brothers and Ian Naccarato in it. Naccarato was first in the first 80cc Intermediate moto on Saturday, followed by Sam DeAtley and Matt DeAtley. Saturday's second moto had Sam first, Naccarato second and Matt third. Sam DeAtley and Naccarato are very competitive; it looked like they were taking turns showing each other a wheel in the corners. The two aired it out over jumps and tabletops side by side with precision. Naccarato won the first moto on Sunday, with Sam second; the second-moto win went to DeAtley. The Supermini class had some n e _ os; Spokane Airway Heights Motocross Track: sam "Superman" DeAtley checks out the sound system In Richland, Washington, site of rounds three and four of the Northwest National Motocross Spring Series_ great racing as well, with Sam, Naccarato and Matt going one-two-three on both days. Heath Robertson was fastest in the grip-'n' -rip 125cc Intermediate class on Saturday, going 1-1, but on Sunday, Richland's Jason Zuhlke posted a 2-1 tally for first overall. Zuhlke looked like he's adjusting well to the four-stroke switch, but all the men in this class need to be looking over their shoulders, because Idaho youngster Sam DeAtley is getting his leg up on a eighth-liter machine. DeAtley finished 5-11 on Saturday but went 4-4 on Sunday for third overall. DeAtley showed that once he gets off those booster blocks, he can ride the KXI05 big-wheel bike. Injury-prone PRO/DeVol-backed Bryce Livesey is out for the year after breaking both bones in his lower legs during practice. The "Hot or Cold" award goes to Othello, Washington's 60cc Beginner rider Cameron Jungers, who moved from 20th in moto one to second in moto two on Saturday. In the. 50cc Auto class, newcomer Hayden Evanson went 2-3 on Saturday and 2-2 on Sunday for a hard-earned second overall. Look for more from her in upcoming races. There was factory support for this series on Saturday, with contingency money available for top finishers by Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Skagit Powersports awarded a $50 gift certificate to holeshot artist Prentice Clark, who got out in front by two wheel lengths in the 125cc Junior class.
