many riders choosing to take a practice lap, the riders were cautious and tried to keep from taking bad lines early i:l the race. Positions were swapped around, but by the end of the first lap, Stone was still in the lead. Shaw, Nesbitt and Rector had all put in a good lap as well and followed Stone closely, along with local rider Chad Busenbark and Ken Yount. The second time around the track proved to a bit more challenging. The good lines had turned into the bad lines, and the trail was already littered with stuck bikes and weary riders. Shaw made his move for the lead, and he led coming into the pits after an hour and 10 minutes of racing. Stone was a solid second, with Nesbitt looking strong in third after a quick splash of fuel. Rector seemed content in fourth, well within reach of leader Shaw. Shaw and Stone both stumbled on lap three while Nesbitt upped the pace on his Moose/Scott/IMS/Renthai/Maxima-backed Team Green Kawasaki. Rector moved up to second, while Forrester made a big climb to third. Thiele was recovering from his early trouble and held fourth. Shaw hit the check in fifth and stopped for fuel. With a lap to go and trail conditions deteriorating, the win could still go to anyone of the first half-dozen riders. Unfortunately for half of that group, the rutted and soft terrain was taking a toll on their fuel consumption. The first to feel the sting was Thiele, whose KX250 ran dry only halfway through the last lap. Stone slipped by and picked up a position, only to run out of gas a little further down the trail. Stone's roommate and fellow AA Kawasaki rider Richie Anderson was running just outside the top lOon his 125 when he, too, ran out of gas, within sight of the other two casualties. Everything seemed to be going good for Nesbitt out front until he also joined the ranks of "out-ofgassers" with just over a mile to go. While he was filling his water system with gas from a lapper, Rector moved into the lead and headed for home. Rector was far enough ahead that he had time to stop before the checkpoint and ask his pit crew, "Am I winning?" Yes, indeed. Forrester put together a fine performance on his way to second, moving up throughout the race. A somewhat aggravated Nesbitt rounded out the podium. Shaw brought his 300 KTM home fourth, and Busenbark completed the top five on a Yamaha WR426. eN St. .IlIe Sbte Pull 'elil Hills, Missa rl Results: March 31, 2002 [Round 21 O/A: 1. On the final lap, Pi no went down in the step-up Weatherford MX Park: At round two of the FMF North Texas Night Series In Weatherford, Daniel Martin won both the 125cc Intermediate and 125cc Open classes, repeating his performance at Village Creek during the opening round. off-camber just after the first turn. Martin took the win, followed by Sturdivan, who retook second when Pino went down. Martin grabbed the holeshot in moto two and never looked back, taking the win and the overall. Martin took the first 125cc Open moto win, ahead of Pino, Jake Arrington, Sturdivan and Neil Dauphinais. The second moto once again saw Martin take the win, with the players in different order at the finish line. Sturdivan (4-2) collected second overall, with Arrington (3-3) third. The 85cc (14-16) and (12-13) groups were combined, with all 22 riders leaving the gate together. Sean Hackley Jr., a 12-13 rider, had the holeshot in his sights, but when exiting the first tum tight and inside, Preston Rigby got pushed out and jumped the bump that marked the entrance onto the course and ran into Hackley, taking both of them down. Another pile-up incurred on the outside of the start that involved Ty Bufkin, Aaron Grimes, Scott Forbes, Malachi Walker and Taylor Smith. Everyone remounted but trickled onto the track at the back of their respective classes. In the meantime, 14-16 rider Wennerstrom escaped the melee and Jed the race to the finish. Wennerstrom got the moto-two holeshot, with 12-13 rider Walker in second. Walker took the lead out of the first turn, but Wennerstrom took it back two turns later over the triple. Brandon Pipkin, a 12-13 rider, gated third, in front of Hackley, but Hackley passed Pipkin on lap two. Hackley then passed Walker for second, but Walker got Hackley back on the next lap. Wennerstrom put in a strong percue •• formance in the lead, while Hackley again passed Walker to finish second in the race and first in the 85cc (12- 13) ranks. Hackley, however, could only garner fourth overall with his first-moto 10th-place finish, so the win went to Pipkin (2-3). In the 18-rider 85cc Open contest, the first moto belonged to Hackley, who grabbed the holeshot and carried it to the checkered flag, followed by Wennerstrom, Taylor Smith, Robert Scruggs and Walker. Wennerstrom countered back in moto two to claim the holeshot, in front of Smith and Hackley. A bar-tobar battle ensued between Hackley and Smith, with Hackley passing into second over the triple. Hackley then wicked it up and went after Wennerstrom, but Wennerstrom refused to relinquish the lead. Walker had a less-than-stellar start but made a remarkable recovery, passing his way up through the ranks to finish fourth, behind Smith. Heemsbergen flat-tracked his way through the first turn to claim the in the 51 cc Open first-moto holeshot, chased by Steven Arnold. By the end of lap two, Heemsbergen had a 13-second lead, and he extended it to 20 seconds by moto's end. Arnold held fast to second, followed by K.J. Evans, Trey Twilliger and Quinton Oliver. Heemsbergen took the secondmoto win as well, with Arnold second and Evans third. Jason Espey finished fourth in the second outing, with Chance Winters capping off fifth. Zeb Smith won both the 65cc (10-11) and 65cc Open events with second-moto victories after first-moto second-place finishes. Chaz Holladay got the holeshot in the fifst 65cc (10- 11) moto, with Smith, Preston Primm and Sean Miller following. On lap two, Miller got around Primm, and then Primm ran into Miller, with both going down. Both remounted and rejoined without losing positions, with Miller taking third and Primm fourth. In moto two, Smith took the lead out of the first turn and Miller took a soil sample. Primm gated second. Miller remounted quickly, catching up to third by the end of the first lap. Once Miller caught Primm, he did everything in the book to get by him, but Miller held his ground to the finish. Tye Jackson finished fourth, followed by Tommy Miller. Holladay was absent from the field, so Smith happily accepted the overall win with a2-1~1~. _ Weatherford MX '-iii Weatherford, Teus Results: April 5, 2002 [Round Zl 50 SHAFT: 1.
