At the gate's drop, Justin Sanders snared the best start of the day. and he took the pack up the hill and around the 180-degree left turn and into the downhill; there are no slight inclines or descents here - everything is either elevator-up or elevatordown! It seemed that at the bottom of the next portion of the course (the aptly named "Stairs of Despair" uphill whoops that were designed by Club Moto honcho Kirk Smith). it was time for Chandler to assert himself. He squirted inside Sanders and never looked back. Sanders kept the leader in sight and did finish second; he was followed over the line by Marsh and Yamaha-mounted Jason Cameron. Five motos. five wins for Chandler. In other class action. young Daniel Washington took a page out of professional rider James Stewart's book and pushed himself to an overall win in the 80cc Beginner class. Washington and his RM Suzuki were not perfect on the day. but he showed determination and drive and a deep desire to excel in his motocross endeavors. In the first moto, eight of the 80cc Beginners drove off the start line. and five laps later it was Washington taking the checkers first. He was chased to the wire by the sometimes very fast Mason Womack. Third in the first moto was Joel Blocksom. on a Yamaha. In moto two, the gutsy Casey Smithhart. who had his share of problems in moto one, decided he had something to prove. He was an immediate contender from the drop of the gate. and he passed into the lead by midway through lap one. Smithhart held on for the moto win. but his 4-1 day resulted in second overall. The effort to catch Smithhart was well-rewarded, as Washington put his Suzuki into second place at the checkers to garner first place overall with his 1-2 performances. Coming in third in the moto and third overall was the fast but inconsistent Womack, on his Kawasaki. aubMGta Uver...... Celifemial Reaulb: Man:ll 3D. 211112 lllauad 41 50 FIT: 1. By moto. Starling has become very comfortable on the 50 and is always one of the top riders in the class. Starling won the moto. followed by a determined Mikey Morello. Andrew Stocker finished third, and George Warren beat out Ryan Baker for the fourth position. The second moto was all Starling's again. Stocker charged a little harder to overtake Morello for the second spot. Hector Roman's second moto was much better than his first. as he finished fourth. Rounding out the top five was Chandler Beare. Starling showed everyone that he was king on the 50 as he handily won the first moto of the 50cc Open (4-9) class. Morello and Stocker followed CRAIG JOHNSON OKEECHOBEE. Fl.. MAR. 24 ustin Starling started off with two perfect scores at the first round of the fourth annual Florida Motocross Series. Starling rode stupendously in the 50cc Stock (7-9) and 50cc Open classes to 1-1 finishes. Starling then put in a good ride on his KTM 60 in the 65cc (7-9) class to score second overall with a 2-2 score. Some 358 riders turned out for the event, and the promoter of the series, Dean Dyess Jr., had worked the track into the night on Saturday and had it perfect. as always. Starling shot his Cobra 50 into the lead in the first 50cc Stock (7-9) J 78 MAY 1. 2002· c u e I e n • _ s Thunder Cross Motoraports Parte Justin Starling wheelies to the SOcc Stock (7-9) and SOcc Open (4-9) class wins at the opening round of the Florida Motocross Series in Okeechobee. Starling home in second and third. respectively. The winner of the 50cc (4-6) portion, Adam Cianciarulo, made it to the finish in fourth. Roman took the fifth spot. In the second moto, Morello kept Starling honest for the top spot. Morello could never mount a charge to get the top position and settled for second. Cianciarulo impressed everyone by placing third; he will be a force to be reckoned with when he moves to the older class. Stocker had problems and finished fourth, and Beare had another good second moto, placing fifth. Kyle Goerke led the field of KTMs and Kawasakis in the first 65cc (7-9) moto. Goerke pulled out to win the moto over Starling. Michael Clarke followed the two in third. Stocker beat out Kevin Abood for fourth. Goerke continued to turn heads as he won the second moto. Starling has learned well on the 60 and placed second again. ahead of Clarke. The battle for fourth was great; Abood moved up one spot to claim the position. beating out Sal Burnesci and Stocker. In the first 125cc C moto, Dean Dyess won. over Brandon Abell. Mike Morgan took third. and Travis Norvell and Camden Cruz rounded out the top five. The second moto was another Dyess show. The order behind him was a complete mix-up from the first moto: Kyle Levalley kept Dyess honest this moto, though Levalley could only muster seventh the first time out. Corey Norvell was third this time, and Morgan dropped a spot to finish fourth. Abell was struggling and ended up fifth. Any of these riders are capable of winning, so it remains to be seen what will happen at the next round, in Dade City. Dyess had some more competition in the Youth (12-15) class. Shaun Skinner put his KTM out front in both motos. with Dyess keeping close tabs both motos in second. Ricky Renner decided to tryout the bigger-bore class and placed third in the first moto, as he and Cruz battled for the third spot overall. Cruz beat out Renner the second time out for third overall. Cody Walker rounded out the top five in both motos. Renner put his Yamaha out front in both 85cc (12-13) motos. Renner was chased by Shawn Weech, John Mulleavey and Tyler Tiffany. The three finished in the same order the second time out. Zach Hamilton broke into the fifth-overall spot with a 6-5 score. Renner faced more competition in the Supermini class. Matt Goerke is probably the fastest Mini rider in the state of Florida on any given day. Goerke beat out Renner in both motos to take the overall. Dustin Jensen followed the two home in third in both motos. Jimmy Warren and Mulleavey fought for fourth overall. Mulleavey beat out Warren in the first moto for fifth. In the second moto, Warren turned the tables and beat Mulleavey for fourth. The second moto was the tie breaker.
