May made the pass on Allen toward the end of the mota and put some distance between himself and Allen. The mota finished with Graham in first, May second and Allen in third. May looked as though he had different plans for mota two. After hounding Graham for the entire first lap, May made the move and passed at the bottom of one of Mill Creek's downhill sections. May held the lead for quite some time before he fell victim to Graham, who made the pass and then went on to win. Graham took the overall for the day, followed by May in second and Allen in third. John side picturesque Shaker Lake, the nat track was composed of ash and clay, and was initially very slippery in the second tum, making the outside line the best place to hook up. Having just recently obtained his Rotax, Comeaux had been looking for a chassis setup that would let him put all of its power to the track. He must have found it. Comeaux utterly dominated both of the Open heat races and the main. There was some drama In the main, as Comeaux, along with four other riders, went down in the treacherous second corner. Open gladiator D.J. Cart suffered a broken collarbone. Comeaux got up, dusted off the Rotax, and dominated from start to finish after the restart. Young Daniel "The Rock" laRocca of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was equally dominant in both of the Youth heat races and the main. In Speedway, it was decided that there would be three races, with each paying points. The Speedway riders' overall placement (and dollars won) would be based on total points earned. There was an exciting duel in the Speedway class between legendary Southwest Louisiana Speedway rider Wayne "Crusty" Jones and Comeaux. Jones had not originally planned on being a competitor; he was planning on being the tuner for his nephew Jeremy MIdkiff, a young lion of speedway. As Midkiff was needed elsewhere (read: "day job"), Jones came out of semiretirement to defend the family honor. In the first Speedway race, Jones got a great start and put his 500cc "Iaydown" Jawa up front. Jones kept the high line and Comeeux chose the inside line for his upright Jawa. The better traction and Jones' more modem motor prevailed. In the second race, Comeaux's slicing to the inside paid off. He found enough traction exiting tum two to zip past Jones on the inside and took the checkers. Comeaux was doing the best riding of his career, and his momentum made him a strong contender for the third race. The points were dead even between Comeaux and Jones. The third race would determine who got the big bucks and the reputation as the best Speedway racer in southwest Louisiana. A buzz began among the spectators; these avid nattrack fans knew this was history was in the making. In speedway, the winner is usually the rider who gets the best start, and Jones is "Mr. Holeshot." At the start of the third and deciding race, Jones' Jawa reared skyward, throwing him off like a bucking bronco. After a few suspenseful minutes, "Crusty- managed to get to his feet and made his way to the starting line. On the restart, Jones, in great pain, unbelievably had the best start of his day. He rocketed into the lead and held off Comeaux's inside charges all the way to the finish. Results YTH HEAT I: I. DanJef LaRo«.: 2. Shawn Clark; 3. P.trkk Comeaux. YTH HEAT 2: I. D.tniel LaRexc.; 2.
