Jay Smith By BART NEWMAN HA presents the 7th ANNUAL MXDAY I Ma 10-11, 2002 Baja Acres M1LUNGTON, MI, MAR. 30 Baja Acres welcomed more than 500 riders from around the Midwest to round two of Michigan's District 14 Spring Fling Series, which offered factory contingencies from Husqvarna, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Kreg Bigelow used his home-track advantage to stomp the competition in the Over 35 class, winning both motos going away. When the gate dropped for the first moto, Bigelow brothers Kreg and Kip got the leap on the field to lead the pack around the fast lefthander that comprises Baja's first tum. Kreg used the power advantage of his Planet Honda/MCR Suspension-sponsored CRF450 over Kip's CR250 as the two front-runners headed up and over Baja's famed monster hill, "Kong, - Dan Headley was third, but Mark Smith was doing all he could to find a way past, while Brian Evans held down fifth. Smith made his move in the left-hand sweeper just before the finish line, where Headley went a little wide, leaving the door open for Smith to take over third. The track was wet and deep, thanks to a downpour less than a day before the event, but the Baja crew did a great job of making a raceable circuit, which only got better as the day went on. Kreg picked his lines carefully and slowly began to put some distance on the field. Kip was second, with a good lead over Smith, who, once he had gotten around Headley, opened up a comfortable lead as well. Headley was fifth, and he soon felt some pressure from Brian Evans and Phil Peyton, who were fighting over sixth. In the end, the order stayed the same, with Bigelow locking up the win. The start of mota two was a carbon copy of moto one, with Kreg out front again, Kip in second, and Smith in third after he got the jump on Headley, who held down fourth. Brian Young was fifth. Kreg was on the gas, but so was Kip, who was kept within striking distance for several laps. Smith was in third but off the leaders pace. Headley had trouble on lap three, going down while battling with Young over fourth. As the finish-line f1agger pulled out the checkered flag, it was Kreg Bigelow (1-1) taking the win and the overall. Kip Bigelow (2·2) was a strong second all day but just couldn't make the move into first. Smith (3-3), whose forte is woods racing but who proved to have game out on the motocross track as well, finished third overall. Young (9-4) took fourth in moto two, over David Howard, whose 7-5 finishes were good for fifth overall, after Headley, whose 4-7 moto scores made him fourth overall. Baja began the new season with an early race, new owners and a Friday afternoon rainstorm, and all went well. Don't miss the next race on the Baja calendar, on May 11 and 12, for another great Michigan MX weekend. ~veriZ2n @YA (Y...). Bigelow the Boss at Baja Spring Fling ROVER iiIi'...ii'R;j=Iff,,1! ."
