Las Vegas Motor Speedway Costella Can Do By DICK GOODWIN nail-bitingly intense as the first one, that didn't mean that it wouldn't be interesting. On lap two, leading while racing at warp speed through the whoops, Partridge got sideways completely Sideways! Defying the laws of physics, he didn't tip over, but continued the race. Of course, Costella, who was just behind him, rocketed past and out into a big lead. Partridge had to pull off to straighten out his bent triple clamp, due to the "crash in the whoops that wasn't." That left. Dotson in second, with Griffin holding off the rest of the field. Costella flowed through to win race two by a huge margin and capture the overall 125cc title. Griffin's solid racing would earn him the overall number-two spot, ahead of Theobald, Simmons and Matt Craft. Results LAS VEGAS, NV, MAR. 24 The place to be on March 24 was the Las Vegas Motor Speedway - that is, if you wanted to witness some great motocross racing. The weeks preceding the "World Mini" always draw in some outstanding out-of-town talent, and with the likes of LaCenter, Washington's Hill brothers, Lake Elsinore, California's Micky Griffin, and Pueblo, Colorado's Billy Dotson joining the locals, some great racing seemed in the cards. The 125cc Intermediate class was small, but deadly. The pre-race favorite was probably Las Vegas' own Kyle Partridge. It seems like the Partridge boys are always contending for this world title here or that national crown there, and this year is no exception. Stepping up beside Kyle is the equally talented local lead foot Derek Costella. The two yellow pilots are anything but mellow, and they are capable of putting their Suzukis at the front of any race they run. They are lying in the weeds, waiting for the world to come to Las Vegas for the World Mini. However, on this day, they got to bang heads with each other, and a handful of other very fast 125cc racers. Partridge and Costella shot off the gate into the lead, with Dotson, contesting the Pro portion, just behind them. Racing almost as one, Partridge and Costella opened up a quick lead. As they tore around the track, Costella tried a hll(d pass on.!ap two and almost ate it, giving Partridge a little breathing room. Dotson was hanging on in third, while Griffin was leading Scott Theobald and Jon Simmons. Costella put it back in overdrive and slowly inched up to Partridge. The white-flag lap was one that you could make a highlight film from, as Partridge and Costella flew around the track side by side, whipping over the many jumps in unison and drawing all eyes to the track. That big yellow bike at the finish line was really two yellow bikes, and Partridge was in the front seat. Partridge nailed holeshot number two to start the second half. Theobald was sandwiched between him and Costella. Derek waited until the off-camber jump to slice into second and quickly hooked up with Partridge.
