assault of the I25cc A class, where he ripped off great starts and rocketed his YZ250F in for the wins. Suzuki jockey David Hill went 2-2 for second. ahead of Cycle Specialtiesbacked Suzuki jockey Brad Strunk (3-3). Rounding out the top five were the sleepy Whitcraft brothers, tired from driving all night from a regional arenacross race in North Carolina. Strunk handled the 250cc A class. Andrich led through the last lap of the final moto. when he stalled his massive YZ426F. allowing Strunk the victory. Hill garnered another second, ahead of third-placed Chris Whitcraft and fourth-placed David Whitcraft. The 85cc (12-15) class featured a vicious battle between Suzuki pilots Zach Ames and rising star Kyle Smith. Ames captured the overall with a tight 1-1 tally over Smith's 2-2 score. Cadi Adams. now on a Yamaha. took third, ahead of Suzuki jockey Levi Kilbarger. eN e.tnI Dille CIT, ,1IIIGa II.... IIoblc:raa Slopr ...... IIlIIo 1IaIIIls: II8n:It Z4. ZI8Z I " " 41 50 P/W: I. AMPI&FI Spring Series Reunllll: Oatfield IllcewIY Quick Nick Flicks the Switch By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS rORLOCK.CA,MAR.24 ick Davis was simply "on" as he dominated a talented 20-rider field of I25cc Intermediates at round one of the AMP/GFI Spring Series. sponsored by Swift Auto World. Piloting a potent Oakley Sport/ FMF /Thor/Posey Racing-backed Suzuki, Davis chalked up solid backto-back wins for the overall on the picturesque Oatfield Raceway. Following Davis was his teammate Eric McCrummen. who turned in a pair of hard-fought third-place finishes for second overall on the day. A crowd of nearly 400 racers made their way out to the opening round, as the much-anticipated sixrace Spring Series marks a chance at winning either a Yamaha YZI25, courtesy of Yamaha of Modesto, or a KTM 50. courtesy of DH Cycles of Modesto. Each entry is good for a shot at winning, as the 50cc and 60cc riders go for the KTM and the 80cc-and-up riders hope for their name to be drawn for the Yamaha. In addition. the first five rounds feature factory contingency from Yamaha and Husqvarna, as well as a healthy Performance Dollar payout program, ensuring that all riders have a chance at earning a little bonus for their performances. In the first I25cc Intermediate moto, Davis snagged the holeshot. with Gary Ludlum. Cory McDaniel. N 78 MAY 1. 2002' cue • • Court Tiede and David Gassin in tow. Missing from the front of the pack were a number of speedsters including Charlie Morrison, Adam Miller and McCrummen. While Davis opened up a sizable lead early on. things behind him were chaotic. as Morrison went down twice and Gassin hit the deck hard on the long downhill triple. While McDaniel occupied the second spot, McCrummen was on the move. picking off riders in bunches. with Miller. Tiede and Morrison following suit. At the checkers. Davis took the win with room to spare. while McDaniel barely held off McCrummen for second. Miller went down while trying to make a pass for fourth on Tiede. so it was Tiede and Morrison rounding out the top five, while Miller rebounded quickly enough to hold on to sixth. It was a repeat performance for Davis in moto two. as he again put his RM out front early on. Miller enjoyed a much better start this time out, as did Morrison. as the duo trailed Davis. However, bad luck once again hit Morrison. as he took an off-track excursion and later slid out. Miller maintained his second-place position while a battle for third developed between Tiede and McCrummen. Both riders knew the position was critical for the runner-up spot on the day, and McCrummen put a textbook inside move on Tiede with only a few laps to go. While Davis once again greeted the checkers first, followed by Miller, o.""s McCrurnrnen took the important third spot for second overall. That one spot relegated Tiede (4-4) to fourth on the day, as Miller's 6-2 tally gave him third overall on the day. Kevin Rookstool. who came all the way from Klamath Falls. Oregon, smoked the 125cc Novice class with a perfect 1-1 score on the day. After recently moving up from the Mini ranks. the tall Yamaha pilot looked smooth on the bigger bike and went unchallenged on the day. Trevor Doniak posted a 3-2 moto score for second on the day, while Kawasaki jockey George Stephenson III went 4-3 to round out the top three. The huge contingent of I25cc Beginners on hand required two divisions to be run, and it was Derrick Anderson who bested the field as he went I-Ion the day for the Division One overall. Anderson utilized backto-back holeshots and finished well ahead of the field in both motos. while Phil Blurton secured the runnerup spot on the day. The Division Two win went to Nick Richardson, with Kyle Hernandez snagging the number-two spot. eN llatfleld Ileceway TIIflack, Callfllraia llesalts: IIMdI Z4.
