he called a "WORCS-style" race. Not everyone shared his sentiments, complaining instead of the permanent dust-cloud raised by going around and around, making it difficult for spectators to distinguish riders' positions. With most of the race behind him and a comfortable lead, Davis appeared to have the win in hand. He'd been running consistent lap times and, as long as he didn't make any mistakes, it looked to be his. There was, however, the small matter of an unknown guy on a blue thumper, which was now gaining by an incredible 20 seconds per lap. The anticipated showdown never came, however, as Davis suddenly pulled off, the victim of a failed main bearing, leaving the 24-year-old Colorado Powers ports racer to ta ke over the lead and cruise to the checkers. After two hours and 18 minutes of racing, all Karlsen could say was, "These guys are fast - I just tried to pace myself." Some of the best racing was between Pearson, Andrews, Brown and Garrahan, the four riders swapping positions back and forth. Pearson prevailed and took his second runner-up finish in two days. "Second again," he said. "Me, Fred and Brian battled all day long; I got in front of him, he got in front of me, Fred got in front of us both ... " "It was kind of like a WORCS race - it's just a big moto," Davis said. "f was kind of bummed." "Russ was going a good pace, so f just followed him," Garrahan said. "He's kind of squirrelly; he crashes a lot, so he'd crash, I'd get by him...Fred and I got in a good race on the last lap; he made a mistake, and I dove inside of him on the last corner." "I think the AMA should have come out and looked at this place," said fourth-place Andrews. "They got a great facility for motocross, but this is no hare scrambles track." Abbott was fifth, and both he and ninth-overall teammate Brown were apparent victims of dust in their KX250s. Abbott's bike was running rough, and after pulling the Filter Skin yielded no improvement, he pulled in for a filter change that seemed to fix the problem. By then, he had lost much ground on the leaders. eN Twa Rivers Racing Millikin, Colanda ResuDs:.priI14,Z002 Saturday A WOM: 1. Amanda Mastin (KTM); 2. Heather Wilson (Kaw). A SR (40.): I. Upcoming Rounds: Round 3 - Huricane Mills, Tennessee, April 21 Round 4 - Kahoka, Missouri, April 28 BRIEFLY••• So you think you want to live the life of a glamorous National oft-road racer? Consider this: After completing 84 dusty miles at round three of the AMA National Hare & Hound Series in Utah on Saturday, several of the top riders, including Russ and Nick Pearson, Ty Davis, Brian Brown and Destry Abbott, packed up and headed to Colorado. They drove through the night. rode 70 more dusty miles at the hare scrambles (in Russ and Nick's cases, riding the same bikes), and then loaded up and drove home. This was the first National-level event to be hosted at the Two Rivers Racing facility, located a few miles east of 1-25 in the farming country north of Denver. Situated on a l00-acre parcel of private property outside of the small farming community of Millikin, the facility features a motocross track in one corner, with the rest of the property made up of open ground, some of which was used for the scrambles course. Realizing a 20-year dream, owners/operators Ann, Pat and Dave Leahy bought the land in 1995. After a lot of hard work cleaning the property up and building a track. parking. etc.. they held their first race in 1998. The facility now hosts a regular schedule of local motocross and hare scrambles events that draw riders from all around the front range of Colorado.
