Victorville Motocross Complex Prince's Reign By DON STARK VICTORVILLE, CA, MAR. 23 The Victorville Motocross Complex is blessed with some of the best dirt in the state of California - hands down, no contest. This week's track was perfect. The blend of high-speed, rolling, off-camber turns and knolls gradually led to the slightly more technical rhythm and big-jump section and then blasted back out to the wide-open portion of the track. To say that the 125cc points battle in the winter series was close would be an understatement. In fact, coming into round four of the VMC Winter Series, the difference between first and 10th was a mere 12 points. The points leader, Justin Whitesel, was a no-show at round four due to injuries sustained at round three, where he had approached the 75foot double with the speed to jump it. Unfortunately. the two riders in front of him backed out of it, forcing Whitesel to swerve while going airborne over the big gap_ Whitesel and his YZ125 went for a ride off the track. When the dust settled, his bike was resting on his head. "I just got some cuts and bruises and tore some muscle in my calf and ankle," Whitesel said this week of that incident. "I will be returning to the riding scene sometime next week, but as for the races, I think I might take a little bit of time off to work on some things. I'm riding too far over my head and not practicing the things that I should be practicing. I hope to see you at VMC soon and, yes, I really do feel fine." With Whitesel out, the points lead was up for grabs. When the gate dropped. the 125cc Beginner class blasted out, rushing toward the first tum. Rocky Maida got there first, followed by Shawn Birch and eventual race winner Tony Prince. The smallest guy on the track, Prince, proved that size doesn't matter by running away with two moto wins and almost catching the second~placed Novice from the wave that started about 40 seconds ahead of his gate. Prince won the battle, but Maida won the war; Maida scored third overall, earning 18 points, which boosted him to an eight-point lead in the series, while his closest competitor, Kyle Oswald, came in for the fourth-place points. Tim Waldschmidt is making a late charge in the points after missing the first two rounds due to driver's training school. The top five in points in the 125cc Beginner class are now Maida (with 52 points), Kyle Oswald • Full-Color, Limited-Edition Signed Prints • Printed on Heavy 100 lb. stock • Only 250 in each series • Ready to frame • Signed & Numbered Print $105. 00 , Unsigned Print $30. 00 • CA residents add 7.75% sales tax • Includes Shipping (U.S. only) eye I e n e _ s APRIL 24, 2002 71
