LOUIS, MO, MAR. 23-24 veryone could see bustling in the pits, hear the bikes screaming down the front straight, and smell the scent of race gas in the air; the long off season was finally over and it was time to race. Racers from the Great Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions of CCS converged on Gateway International Raceway for their coveted double-points season opener. A variety of riders attended, some yearning for a championship, others just wanting to twist the wick and grind a slider, but everyone had the same question: Would the off-season bike-and-rider preparation payoff? Ed Key from Marshall, Wisconsin, answered that question by doing something he's never done before in his 32-year racing career: Key piloted his Guy Bartz-tuned Suzuki SV650 to five victories, winning each race he entered. At the track and at the CCS banquet afterward, Key mentioned E that he'd given his SV some extra attention. "I have worked longer and harder, and actually spent more money on the winter project of this motorcycle than I ever have before in my entire life," he declared. It seems to have paid off. However, Key didn't have a walk in the park; it was a race. In his first contest, the Expert Heavyweight Sportsman event, Key started from the second row, but Dr. Greg Smith started out front. Smith got the holeshot on his SV and, despite lofting his front wheel halfway down the straight, he managed to get through turn one first. Key managed to get by Smith, who found himself thinking of his friend Art, who had been seriously injured in a crash earlier in the day; but by midrace, Smith found his mindset and was determined to make a race of it. After following Key, Smith found an opening in the decreasing radius after the carousel, but he decided the Doublln Gap Motocross Parte Casey Clark won both the 125cc and 250cc Open A classes at an AMA Districts 6 and 7 points race In Newburg, Pennsylvania. The race was a warm-up to round one of the 2002 ThorlParts Unlimited Northeast Classic Series, held the following day. safer move would be a last-lap draft to the checkered flag. On the last lap, Smith closed the gap and both riders drove hard out of the chicane and onto the straight. With both riders in complete tuck and throttle cables stretching, they screamed toward the line. Key leaned right, Smith went left out of the draft, but Key's power, courtesy of Bill Whisenet of Motorcycle Performance, was able to hold off Smith and grab the win. Key and his Englehart Center/ Si Ikolene /EBC/Metz ler/ PireII i - sponsored SV went on to win the Expert Lightweight Superbike, Lightweight Grand Prix, Lightweight Supersport, and GT Lights races - quite an accomplishment. In the Amateur inline-four 600cc class, Erik Nolan racked up an impressive four wins on his Chicken Hawk Racing/CV Powersports-sponso red Suzuki GSX-R600. After winning his first race, Nolan was on his third lap of his second race and in the lead when he experienced a vicious slide coming onto the banking. His rear wheel came out and actually touched the wall, hooked up, and shot Nolan forward, smashing his windshield and breaking two of his ribs against his steering damper. Amazingly, Nolan recovered and continue on to secure the win. With the help of the EMTs, some duct tape around his torso, and a few Ibuprofen, Nolan continued his dominance on Sunday, winning his first two races and leading his third until his motor grenaded. Travis King was making his presence known on his Paramount-sponsored Suzukis with a win, a second, and a fourth-place finish. At one point in the Expert GTO race, King's pit board showed he had a four-second lead, so he stopped pushing and co u a I e concentrated on being consistent. What he didn't know was that his familiar rival Shane Stoyko was picking his way forward on his RacingSupply. com/Orient Express-sponsored Suzuki GSX-RI000. King saw Stoyko as he went for the pass, but King put his head down and pulled out the win. Kevin Hanson won the Expert Supertwins race in impressive style on his Visionsports/Vesrah/Lockhart Phillips/Motul/Christine Rich Studiosponsored Ducati 996. Hanson had just mounted a brand-new set of Pirellis and had them on the warmers less than 10 minutes before leaving the pits. With his tires barely warm, he cruised the first few laps until they came in. He was coming into three and four when the leaders were well through the carousel, but by the white flag he had closed the gap and passed them both, and he went on to get his first Expert win. Hanson started racing last year at Road America and raced seven weekends on a Ducati 748. Kevin Gordon had problems in the Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight Supersport race on his Country Joe Home-sponsored Yamaha, but he still managed wins in Middleweight Grand Prix, Unlimited Grand Prix, and Heavyweight Supersport. Gordon also placed second in Expert GTU and third in Heavyweight Superbike. eN 6ateway Intemational Raceway East St. Louis, Missouri Results: March 23-24, 2002 AM L/W S/SPT: 1.
