RMXAlAMA District 25 Colorado Powersporls Spring Series Ro nd 2: Leahy Family Fann Karlsen, Sharp Too Much at Two Rivers Bv Scrambles, the first ever in Colorado. With 597 riders going for crucial JOHN CLIFFORD MILLIKEN, CO, MAR. 24 hen RMXA/AMA District 25 racing hit Colorado's premier facility, "2" was the number of choice. The Leahy Family Farm was the second stop of the Colorado Powersports Spring Series, and a new water truck and a modified track design provided riders with a day of fantastic racing. The Farm is soon to be the' second round of the AMA National Hare W 56 APRIL 24, 2002' .. U .. • _ points, Colorado Powersports' top rider, Matt Karlsen, took time off from contesting the AMA Western FourStroke Nationals to claim the victories in three classes: the 125cc, 250cc and Open Pro classes. Karlsen currently is third in the national points. Even more amazing was Brian Sharp's double victory in Over 40 A and Open Four-Stroke competition at the ripe old age of 50. n __ s In 125cc Pro action, Jared Carlson of Vickery Motorsports grabbed the lead. Andy Atkins, Chad Zulian, Matt Karlsen, Mike Ladner, Rick Stichter, Luke Woodman and Wes Hale followed. Karlsen and Atkins moved out. Hale jumped past Woodman. Ladner moved to fourth in the whoops, going by Zulian. On lap three, Matt Karlsen closed on and passed Atkins. Karlsen took the lead and then motored to victory. In the second moto, Mike Ladner got the holeshot but could not fend off the powerful four-stroke of Karlsen, who started closer to the front but still had to pass fast starter Jared Carlson, which he did. Jared Carlson took second overall. Third went to Ladner, from Spearfish, South Dakota, which certainly made his trip worthwhile. Ladner finally aced the top spot in the Over 25 A class, which helped to fill his truck with Colorado gas for the drive home. John Merwin of Cheyenne, Wyoming, put in a solid 2-2 ride for second, just ahead of a seesaw battle for third between Darrell Miller and Wes Hale. Miller's third-place finish in moto two gave him the nod. Showing it's never too late to race, Brian Sharp rode his new Honda CRF450R to a close victory in the Over 40 Pro class. In both motos, Sharp and Bob Ashleigh, also on a Honda CRF450R, were never more than three bike lengths apart, and it was a photo finish, with the nod going to Sharp. Then Sharp raced against the fourstrokers. In the first moto, he snared the holeshot and motored to a big victory. Scott Dennison and Jeff Aley placed behind him. In the second moto, Sharp worked his way up from third and then quickly moved in for a second victory over riders half his age. Ashleigh grabbed second, and Doug Duncan was third. Denison, Aley and Ashleigh had a three-way tie for second, but the age-over-youth tie-breaker rule gave Ashleigh second. Even the women doubled up, as sister act Kristi and Katie Hendrixson dominated the Women's racing, with Katie going 1-1 for the Women's B victory and Kristi going 2-2 for second overall in the Women's C class, making Dad doubly proud.
