Loretta Lynn's Qualifier Glen Helen Raceway Park Costella, Pugmire Stomp 'em By JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 17 t's only the first step, but Suzuki's Derek Costella of Las Vegas and Kawasaki's Trent Pugmire of Simi Valley put their feet down with authority as this year's Loretta Lynn's Qualifiers got under way at Glen Helen Raceway Park, with more than 500 entrants testing their chances in 32 classes. Costella collected victories in three of the four events he entered and stunned some of this area's top talents in the process, while Pugmire, who has been almost untouchable so far in 2002, swept all six motos he entered to also record a trio of overalls in the day's program. Though the skies were threatening all day, the anticipated rain held off for most of the day, allowing all the classes to get in their pair of motos without any sloppiness. And, with so many racing for so many opportunities, more than just a handful were multi-class entries. Costella was one of the busiest, scoring back-to-back moto wins in the 250cc/Open B Modified class against 23 others, with Honda's Sean Collier trading seconds and thirds with Suzuki's Dylan Lord; Collier got the nod for runner-up. Lord got his revenge in the 250cc/Open B Stock contest, sweeping, with Collier again second and I Budd. Creek MX Park: Tom Welch charged to the overall wins In the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 25 A classes at the opening round of the District 7 Expert MX Series in Budds Creek, Maryland. on the first lap to take over the lead. Horrocks and Tsakanikas continued to battle for third, while Slusher made his way around Lusk for fifth. With the assembled crowd on its feet, Day and Welch engaged in a fierce battle for the lead, sailing around the notoriously rough Budds Creek course separated by barely a bike length. Just after the halfway mark, Welch made his move, slicing under Day in a heavily rutted, 180-degree turn and racing wheel to wheel with the Yamaha rider entering the track's back section. Welch emerged as the leader, with Day still well within striking distance. Welch blitzed the checkers for the moto win, followed closely by Day. Horrocks was solid in third, followed by Tsakanikas, who put in a steady ride for fourth. Drury made a late-race pass on Slusher to take over fifth. Welch went on to also take the overall wins in the 250cc A and Over 25 A classes. JT Motorsports-backed KTM rider Chris Schueler was the runner-up in the 250cc A class with 2-2 moto finishes, followed by Honda-mounted Nicholas Mowry, who went 4-3 for third overall. Horrocks was fourth overall, finishing 3-4, followed by Bowlin, who went 5-6, for fifth overall. In the Over 25 A class, second overall went to Yamaha rider Robert Swinehart (3-2), followed by Bowlin, who finished 2-3 for third overall. Honda-mounted Scott Trickett finished 7-5 for fourth overall, followed by Kawasaki pilot Glenn Mayor, who put in a consistent 6-6 ride for fifth overall. eN 68 APRIL 17, 2002' c u e • • Budds Creek MX Park Budds Creek, Mlryllnd Results: Mln:h 10, 2002 [Round 1J 50 OIL-INJ: I. In the 125cc B Modified and Stock events, Costella only managed to win one of his four motos but recorded second-place finishes in the other three, and his steadiness prevailed. His 1-2 in the 40-rider Modified class just edged out second-moto winner Cale Wallace, with Lord again back in third. And the moto winners in the Stock rounds - Lord and Suzukimounted Daton Beavers - each had disappointing efforts in their other rounds. In A-class competition, Victorville's Jeff Eide was the most consistent, winning the 125cc A contest and taking second in the 250cc/Open A class, while over in the bigger· bore C-c1ass racing, Las Vegas racer Joshua La Fountaine took home two first-place trophies after a 2-1 performance topped the 34·rider 125cc C Stock class and he won the main showdown in the 125cc C Modified class. Meanwhile, in the 125cc Stock and Modified (12-15) classes, Suzuki jockey Carlos Gonzalez led Yamahamounted Zac Wray in both. Pugmire swept to victories in the 65cc Stock (10-11) and Modified (7 -11) classes, each time besting Murrieta, California's Kawasaki-riding Johnny Jelderda, and topped off his perfect day with the 85cc Stock (7 -11) victory over Yamaha's Dustin ~ ~ CD ~ in ~"'II~ Glen Helen Raceway Parte Derek Costella won three of the four events he entered at the Loretta Lynn'S Qualifier In san Bernardino, California.
