took a very different turn and shook up the field. The finishing order was Johnson, Jacob Capps and Matthew Wilson. The Preteen class was also one of the largest of the day. It W8S impressive to see how the speed of some these kids has really increllsed since last season. This was to be Jesse Aaron's day, as he scored a moto-one victory, pretty much cruising to an easy win, with Kawasaki jockey Hunter Mims puiling up second and Kawasaki-mounted Alex McWilliams rounding out third. Moto two looked like it was going to be a repeat of the first, with Aaron getting out to an early lead, but with two laps to go, Simon Gregg reeled in Aaron and began to put on the pressure. The two riders battled back and forth, swapping the lead several times on the last couple of laps. It all came down to the last uphill jump and the final tum; Aaron bobbled over the jump and allowed Gregg to have the win. However. the two-moto format gave Aaron the overall victory for the day, with McWilliams in second and Mims in third. Results 50 SHAFT: I. Cody Deklny (Yam); 2. Blake Lawson (Yam); 3. Starwest Motocross Park Riddle Me This•••• Bv MIKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, MAR. 23 More than 200 riders showed up to race the start of the Westcoast Spring Series at Star· west, ready to get back to racing after the long winter break. Motoworld/Suzuki·backed Ben Riddle, who hails from Kentucky but is spend· ing some time on the West Coast, checking out the local tracks, looked exceptionally fast in lhe 250cc Pro class. Riddle took both holeshots and moto wins. In the 250cc Intermediate class the win did not come easily for Jason Larson. Brandon Prahm took the first·moto holeshot, followed closely by Tim Birkumshaw and Jason Ciarletta. Birkumshaw started to close the gap and apply the pressure on Prahm. Going side by side into the turn with only a few laps 10 go, Birkumshaw made his move by taking the - outside line and throttling through the turn to take the lead. Prahm settled into second and Larson was third. Birkumshaw took the win, followed by Prahm and Larson. Larson took the early second-molo lead and set the pace. Prahm and Birkumshaw both had bad starts and tried desperately to make their way closer to Larson, but Larson pulled out a comfortable lead and took the overall win by going 3-1. Prahm (2-2) took second, and Birkumshaw (1-3) took the last podium position. Birkumshaw returned to redeem himself by taking the 125cc Intermediate win despite some tough competition from Brandon Milstead. Mike Meade was in control in the 85cc (12-13) division after facing some tough competition from Chad Gores and Curtis Malins. Meade rode with style and confidence as he went 2-1 to take the overall win, followed by Malins (3·2). • Complete and current happenings in "Daily Wind" • The 2002 Cycle News Motorcycle Buyer's Guide • Current International and National Championship Calendar Listings, and TV Listings • Instantly updated race results.
