(Left) Davis (14) batUed with Shane Esposito (4) for second ear1y in the race. Esposito ended up fourth overall. (Right) Brown took over the points lead since the defending Champion, Destry Abbott, had to sit out the race with a shoulder Injury suffered at a WORCS event the previous weekend. VET A: 1. Ty Davis (Yam); 2. Brad McNew When the bikes emerged from the desert for the first gas stop, Davis led Esposito by less than two seconds, and Brown was another five seconds back. According to Esposito, Brown got around him in the pits when they didn't have his goggles ready. Davis made his stop and was back on the course before David and Russ Pearson came in a minute later. Up front, Brown, Davis and Esposito battled back and forth, trailed close behind by Russ and David Pearson. The front three gradually put more distance on the rest of the field. This section, too, saw a number of lead changes. Team Green/FMF-backed Brown said, "Ty let me by, then I let him by when I dumped my fanny pack, it was just beating me in the whoops." By the time they reached the midway point, Brown had taken the lead again. Coming into the second of three gas stops, Davis was now trailing by two seconds, and Esposito another two. Davis took a splash of gas, disregarded water and goggles, and beat Brown out of the pits, while the Team Green crew rushed to get their two lead bikes out at practically the same time. The trail tightened up and Brown and Davis stayed pretty close, while Esposito dropped back, only to catch up again. At one point, Brown tipped over and stalled on a narrow, rocky uphill section, his bike blocking the trail. While he picked it up and tried to get it started, first Davis and Esposito rode up and had no choice but to wait until he got it running. "I stalled it on a narrow, rocky uphill and pretty much had the trail roadblocked, so I just took my time getting it started," Brown said. It was also here that Andy Grider, riding a Honda XR650R, got off the trail and went plummeting down a rocky embankment. He eventually got going again but lost many positions. Through the second half of the race, where the trail got more technical, Brown started putting more time between him and the pack. About 80 miles out, a dehydrated Esposito dropped further off the pace. Apparently he had left soap in his drink system and was unable to drink the water. Davis, too, started loosing ground. "I led for awhile and then I let him [Brown] go by and just keyed off of him. I was trying to wait till the very end, that's where I was going to make my move," Davis said. But he waited too long, as Brown continued to pull away in the tight trails of the final section. At the fioish, when the first bike came into view, it was the green number-two bike and there was no one else in sight. A little over a minute later, Davis crossed the finish line. From there, the field was spread out, with Russ Pearson, Esposito and David Pearson coming into the finish. (Hon); 3. Roger Neth (KTM); 4. Ron Wehr (Hon); 5. Kelly Hill (Vam); 6. Jeff Bell (Hon): 7. BRIEFLY••• Formerly the Rabbit Creek 100, this year's event was renamed the Glen Jones Memorial in honor of a young man who, in past years, contributed countless hours to helping make thiS race happen. Jones passed away of cancer last year. Like more and more off·road races, the pits, start, finish and much of the course was run on pri- vate property. The organizer, Full Bore Racing. wishes to express its extreme gratitude to Paul Nettleton, because without his hospitality this race might not have been held. Defending H&H Champion and first-round winner Destry Abbott was a no-show in Idaho. A hard landing at the Lake Havasu WORCS race left him with a dislocated shoulder. We spoke with him over the phone, and he said that he pians to be at Pahrump, Nevada, for the upcoming Best In The Desert Series round and hopes to be back to 100 percent by round three of the AMA National Hare & Hound Series, April 13, in Utah. cue' e n e _ lIS • APRIL 10, 2002 27
