The 2002 season of the AH RMA Northwest
Regional Motocross Series couldn't have start~
ed better. The Mongers set up an awesome
track. It included a step·up that set more than
a few riders back, two straightaways that
allowed the big·bores to open it up, and a
high·flying tabletop at the finish. The weather
was perfect, with no breeze to blow in the
smell from the neighbors and a low·hovering
fog that kept most of the day cool.
The day started with the Open Age
Experts, Intermediates and Novice starting on
the same gate. Keep your eye on Novice rider
levi Thompson, who had no problem clearing
the tabletop and keeping up with the Experts.
Needless to say, Thompson walked away with
the overall win in his Novice class.
The third moto was the Over 40 Experts.
When the gate dropped, Tom McKinney fell in
behind Steve Parker. With his keen sense of
hearing, Parker kept McKinney behind him for
the first few laps, but McKinney finally made
an outside pass that shot him into first place.
During the second moto, McKinney had to
work past Charlie Richardson and Ed Sims to
pull off his overall sweep of the Over 40
Expert class.
In the Sportsman 500cc Novice class, the
door was slammed shut by Thompson. This
Novice rider becllme a blur to the rest of the
class, leaving Matt Kile to take second, over
Tom McDaniel.
The Sportsman 125cc Expert and Intermediate race held the attention of the spectators. As Ryan Bast took the holeshot in the
Expert division, one spectator was overheard
saying that the old man (which referred to
Steve Gibson) clidn't have it in him to pass the
kid (which was referring to Ryan Bast). Gibson
rode behind Bast for a couple of laps before
he overtook the leader with sure power and
skill. Coming out of the back comer, Bast was
two full bike lengths ahead when Gibson
opened it up. He not only passed Bast but also
was one Bike length ehead by the next comer,
leaving Bast in the dust as the crowd went
crazy. Gibson took the overall win, while Bast
had to settle for second behind the ·old man."
Let that be a lesson to all that that age is nothing more than a number.
The only disappointment of the day was
that the second set of motos had to be cut
down to four laps each due to the large
turnout Charlie Richardson was the ironman
of the Tulare event: He raced three races and
consistently finished in the top spots. James
Hagler gets a thumbs·up for not only finishing
the race without a clutch, but starting and (in·
ishing without a clutch: now, that shows real
die-hard race spirit!
