which had a swift current. This race soon turned into a test of physical ability. With steep, muddy uphills, the question was which riders could pick the best line to get up them, as finding a way around the several bikes stalled on the hillside was a difficult task. Rector was able to use good line choices and pass several riders throughout the entire race, without having any problems. "[In] muddy races, [it's] important to be out in the front from the start, so you're not buried in a pack of riders," stated Rector, who credited his win to being in good physical shape. He has been doing hard workouts while preparing for his first race of the season, and it looks like all the hard work paid off with the overall win. Not only did the KTM 400 EXC pilot easily win the Women's race, she also overalled the entire Novice/Women/Over 50 Senior race, which had 69 starters. All told, more than 300 Amateur riders signed up 1'0 do battle on the small Havasu island. Over the extremely rough 3-mile course - which featured everything from whoops, rocks and thick sand to slick mud and deep ruts - Yancey easily outdistanced her competitors K cue. e n _ _ S • APRIL 3, 2002 77
