(Above) Clay Higgins topped both the $upennlnl and 80Cc (14-16) classes at MotoGrande MX Park In Casa Grande, Arizona. STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT VAN DAMME CASA GRANDE, AZ, MAR. 10 aul Pearcy and Clay Higgins posted a pair of wins at the second round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series, presented by Mel Clayton, FMF, Gordyfs, Franklin, Bent and Red Bull at the MotoGrande MX Park. Pearcy took wins in the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate classes, while Higgins posted wins in the Supermini and aocc (14-16) classes. With the Schoolboy and Big Bike Open classes running combined, Chris Blose led the first moto, pursued by Pearcy, Nate Ramsden, Bryan Ehrman, Kyle Kinsman and Ranel Cox. Ehrman passed Ramsden for third in the start sweeper. Pearcy kept hounding Blose but could not get around for the lead. Kyle Rivera passed Cox in the infield section for sixth. Then Rivera moved by Kinsman for fifth just before the whoops. Cox moved up to sixth by getting by PIIt McMullen _ both mctto. for the - . I I asocc Pro victory. Kinsman on the south side, while D.C. Jones and Kyle Jones were working up from poor starts to run eighth and ninth. On the final lap, Blose lost momentum when coming up on lappers. This let Pearcy get alongside of Blose in the infield section. However, Blose was able to get by the lappers before Pearcy could complete the pass. Blose took the checkers first; then came Pearcy in second and Ehrman in third, followed by Ramsden, Rivera, Cox, Kinsman, Kyle Jones and D.C. Jones. Ramsden pulled the holeshot over Pearcy, D.C. Jones, Blose and Cox in the second moto. Cox moved by Blose in the whoops for fourth. Then, just before the finish line, Pearcy passed Ramsden for the lead. Cox and Blose jumped past Jones over the south-side tabletop jump. Cox passed Ramsden just before the finish line, and then Blose went undemeath Ramsden. Rivera went by Jones for fifth. Then, on the final lap, Rivera tried to pass Ramsden just after the finish line but went too high up the berm and tipped over. That let Ehrman move up a spot. The MSR/ Northland/Factory Effexsponsored Pearcy claimed the moto win, followed by Cox, Blose, Ramsden, D.C. Jones and Ehrman. The first Supermini moto was led out of turn one by Rhett Urseth. Brent Davey was in second, with Higgins in third, followed by Daniel Huddleston and Michael Loder. On lap two, Higgins got underneath Davey and went by for second, but Davey got alongside Higgins going into the next corner and continued toward the south side. The two went into the whoops side by side until Davey slid out going into the next corner. Then Loder passed Huddleston for third, while Curtis Smith and Austin White were fourth and fifth. Davey would resume coming from the eighth spot. On the next lap, both White and Davey passed Smith and Huddleston. Higgins closed the gap to a couple of bike lengths behind Urseth. Then Higgins made a mistake in the whoops, letting Urseth pull away. On the whiteflag lap, Davey went to the inside and passed White for fourth. Urseth held on for the moto win, followed by Higgins, Loder, Davey, White, Smith and Alex Haag. Alex Haag had the holeshot at the start of moto two but was outdragged to the next corner by Higgins. By the end of the first lap, Higgins was first, followed by Davey, Urseth, Loder, Haag, Huddleston and White. On the next lap, White passed Huddleston on the south side for sixth. The top four spread out from each other, with the only battle being for fifth and sixth. White tried for several laps but could not find a way around Haag. Higgins cue' e won the second moto, followed by Davey, Urseth, Loder, Haag and White. Pat McMullen won both motos in the 250cc Pro class. McMullen had the lead over Clevenger and Schlensig at the start of moto one. Clevenger stayed close until the pack came to the finish line. McMullen took the two tabletops at the finish line and doubled them, giving him some breathing room over Clevenger on each lap. McMullen was again in front of Clevenger for the second moto. McMullen tried and doubled the finish-line jumps on the first lap, but he didn't attempt it the rest of the moto, due to the winds that were picking up. That kept the battle close between McMullen and Clevenger. On lap four, Clevenger attempted to outdrive McMullen on the south side but went over the left-handed berm just before the whoops. McMullen cruised in for the win, followed by Clevenger and Schlensig. eN MotoGrande MX Pirie Cal Grande, Arizona Results: Mln:h 10, 2002 (Round 2] P/W (4-6): 1. Jacob Fox (Cob); 2.
