GFI Racing Winter Series North Round 4: Carnegie SVRA By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS UVERJ\10RE, CA, FEB. 3 eries dominator Tallon Vohland piloted a pair of Kawasaki/Scott/ Acerbis-backed KXs to an uncontested sweep of the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round four of the OFI Racing Winter Series North, presented by Swift Auto World. The more than 400 riders who descended upon the Carnegie SVRA park enjoyed yet another rainless winter day. While temperatures were on the cold side, the racing was hot especially behind Vohland. in both Pro classes. While Vohland won by huge margins in all four motos, Evan Laughridge and Craig Truglio kept the crowd interested as the two battled it out for the runner-up spot. In fact, their speeds were so evenly Suzuki jocke)' Joe)' Rodriguez topped the 250cc Intennediate class at Carnegie SVRA in Livennore, California. matched, it was a matter of who was ahead of whom off the gate. Laughridge secured the second position in both 125cc motos early on and held Truglio off, but things were not so easy for the American Suzuki/Roseville Cycle/IRS/Thor-backed Laughridge in the 250cc Pro motos. In the first 250cc Pro moto, Truglio tucked his Yamaha of Modesto/O'Neal/TMR-backed YZ in behind the speedy Vohland, and although Laughridge was hot on his tail, Truglio appeared to have the second spot nailed down - but halfway through, disaster struck for Truglio as he descended the hill and came to a complete stop. "As I came out of the corner, my leg swung back against the rear tire and my boot got caught between the fender and tire", Truglio said. "I had to stop and back up to get untangled." Truglio's mishap was all Laughridge needed to score the runner-up spot, behind Vohland, while Truglio recovered and charged to take the third spot. In moto two, it was the same order up front, and again the crowd was focused on the race for second. However, Vohland overshot a berm and went off the track. Although he reentered just in time to hold on to the lead, Truglio lost his concentration over Vohland's mishap and allowed Laughridge to zip by. In the end, Laughridge scored a pair of seconds, while Truglio held on for a pair of thirds on the day. Joey Rodriguez piloted his All American Suzuki/ BR1/No Toil RM to an overall victory in the 250cc Intermediate class after series dominator Eric Nye ran into trouble in moto two after a wire-to-wire win in moto one. Rodriguez nailed down the holeshot in moto two and quick-Iy opened up a seemingly comfortable lead ahead of the field. Nye quickly moved up and set his sights on Rodriguez and appeared to have the speed to take another victory. However, Nye got a little overanxious and hit the ground. Rodriguez went on to take the win and the overall on the day via a 2- 1 score. "I've been running behind Adam Miller and Nye for quite a few races, and it feels good to finally win one," said Rodriguez. "I've been practicing hard, and my goal's to beat those guys straight up with consistency." Nye rebounded in the 125cc Intermediate class, taking a pair of wins over Nick Davis. While Nye put in a flawless performance, Davis had trouble in moto one. After taking the holeshot, Davis went down on the second lap, which relegated him to the back of the pack. However, he charged hard and clawed his way up to fifth at the checkers - a key spot that earned him second overall on the day after a strong runner-up ride in moto two. Corey Pennington topped the Supermini ranks, in which a huge turnout required two divisions. After taking second to Jordan Mockridge in Tallon Vohland rode his Kawasakls to a sweep of the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round four of the GFI Racing Winter Series North. the first moto of Division One, Pennington followed that up with a solid victory in moto two for the overall, while Mockridge held on for second on the day with a 1-2 tally. It was a wild one in the 80cc Novice class, as the top three riders all finished with inconsistent scores. Tyler York pulled out the most consistent score of the bunch, as his 3-1 score sealed the deal. Curtis Sweezey (2-5) and Cary Tiede (1-6) rounded out the top three. CN Hodges (Yam); 3.
