Southeast X-treme Winter Challenge Series Round 1: Tunnel Hill Motorsports Thomason, Streifthau Top Tunnel Hill By PAC LEWIS TONNEL HILL, GA, JAN. 27 ound one of the Southeast X-treme Winter Challenge kicked off on a beautiful day for racing at Tunnel Hill Motorsports. D.C. Thomason finished the day with the overall victory in both the 125cc Band 250cc B classes. He piloted his Extreme Cycle-backed KTM to commanding wins in both 125cc B motos, but the 250cc B class would prove to be a little tougher. With Dash Lyle returning from wrist surgery, and with 250cc B-c1ass veterans such as Jack Brooks, Kevin Yerby and Steven Wilbanks in the race, it was a loaded gate. The recently advanced Chris Hall took the holeshot in moto one, but Thomason passed for the lead in the first rhythm section and gained a marginal lead. Lyle, who suffered a miserable start, was coming through the pack at a rapid pace, but a miscalculation on the uphill triple cost the Suzuki Yamaha of Dalton rider some precious time. Thomason had a comfortable cushion after that and went on for the moto win, with Lyle in second. The second moto started similarly, but this time Thomason got the holeshot. Lyle again had a less-thanstellar start, but better luck would help the Suzuki rider get through the pack and cut into Thomason's lead, though he never quite got close enough to make a move. Thomason scored another win on the day. Lyle would rebound to sweep the 16-24 Amateur class with 1-1 scores, followed by Andrew Gaddis. Torre Streifthau had a perfect day aboard his Tom's Cycles Kawasaki. Completely dominating the Youth (12-15) class with a 1-1 sweep, he also scored another 1-1 tally in the 125cc C class, over last week's winner, Gaddis. Aided by great starts, Streifthau saw no real challenges on the day except for a late-moto charge by Gaddis that fell just a few seconds short of the checkers, as Streifthau crossed the finish line first. Matt Bell and Tyler Horne swapped first- and second-place finishes in the 85cc (7-11) and 85cc (9-13) contests. In some of the best racing R of the day, Bell piloted his YZ to a 1-2 tally in the 85cc (7-11) class to take the overall from Horne, whose 3-1 was good enough for second overall. However, in 85cc (9-13) action, it was Horne who scored a 1-1 tally and the overall, with Bell having to settle for second. In 85cc (12- 15) action, Gregory Roberts made things look easy, as he was never challenged en route to 1-1 finishes. He repeated that performance in the Supermini contest, also taking an easy 1-1 tally, which left him perfect on the season with eight straight moto wins. In 125cc A action, Tony Graham put in a nearly perfect ride to take the win over fellow Dalton Motorsports rider Kris Swaney. However, Swaney put his new 450F on the top step of the podium in the 250cc A class, followed by Sean LeCroy, who also put in a good ride in the 125cc A class, finishing third. In Vet action, Honda-mounted Steven Wilbanks put in stellar performances in the Over 25 and Over 30 classes. The only Yet rider to consistently jump the uphill triple, Wilbanks took first place in the Over 25 class, over Jack Brooks and Kevin Yerby. The Over 30 class had Kenneth Stowe and Craig Greer rounding out the podium behind Wilbanks, but Greer would rebound to score the overall in the Over 35 class, over Tim De Yaney. DeSimone dominated the field again, as he captured the overall 85cc (12-13) title with ease. Powell's solid seconds netted him second overall, besting Gierer, Kirk and Timothy Kerf. Renzi doubled up on Morast to take the 85cc (14-16) crown. Usually the largest (and arguably the rowdiest) class is the 125cc Novices. These guys are both fast and nasty. One of the top contenders is Toe Westbay, but he found himself behind holeshot winner Willie Ungerman and Justin Fraughton as race one pounded out of the gate. Fraughton blasted into the lead, towing Westbay right behind him. As the top two were banging bars, Lyle Almond, Ungerman, Daniel Nordwig and Sean Nordwig were scrambling for third. Westbay hounded Fraughton for the whole moto, finally Casino Towns Motocross Series Round 2: Las Vegas Motor Speedway DeSiDlone Does the Deed By DICK GOODWIN LAS VEGAS, NV, JAN. 27 onda-mounted Dominic DeSimone, the scourge of the 85cc (12-13) class, annihilated the competition in the combined 85cc race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, as round two of the six-race Casino Towns Motocross Series unfolded under bright, sunny skies. Renegade Sports' Brady Powell fired the opening salvo, as the Utah hotshoe pulled Kurtis Gierer, De Simone and the rest of the field around the course. His turn as lead dog was short-lived, however, as the Escel/RK Chain/Yortex/N -Stylesponsored DeSimone came roaring past to take control of the race. Powell hung on in second. Further back, Gierer was fending off assaults from 85cc (14-16) stars Chris Renzi and Josh Morast. DeSimone established total dominance from midrace on, winning moto one with ease. Powell finished a solitary second, ahead of Gierer, as Renzi topped Morast for the senior-division honors. Powell duplicated his heroics to start the second half, only this time DeSimone was closer and he passed for the lead even faster than before. This race was toast before the first circulation of the track was complete. Powell was racing strong again in second, but DeSimone had uncorked the kind of serious speed that wasn't going to let anyone get close to him on this day. Morast, Renzi, Tracon Kirk and Gierer were involved in a wild brawl for third as, a little further back, Tony Henderson was dueling H ICUlCle Las Vegas Motor Speedway: Dominic DeSimone was a double-class winner at the opening round of the Casino Towns Motocross Series in Las Vegas, scoring victories in the 85cc (12-13) and 85cc Open classes. getting by him late in the moto to win a close first race. Almond, Ungerman, Nordwig and Tim Parsons followed those two through the pipes. Almond snatched the second-half holeshot, with Ungerman and Westbay right behind him. Fraughton worked his way up to challenge Almond, fighting his way into the lead after the finish-line tabletop. Westbay was also on a tear, catching up to and passing Fraughton on lap two. Fraughton fought back, but Westbay made his pass stick, gradually pulling a lead on everyone else. Fraughton sat unchallenged in second, while Almond was doing a good job of holding off Ungerman, Nordwig and Patrick Provencher. Westbay rolled to win number two, and with it the overall 125cc Novice crown, while n e _ s • MARCH 6, 2002 49
