Not a winter storm, as you might expect this time of year; this storm came with thunder! The storm was called "Arenacross." With soldout crowds on both Friday and Saturday nights and more than 400 riders showing up on Sunday for Amateur Day, the Springfield fans had to hold on to their hats so as not to be blown away by all the action. The biggest rainmaker of the weekend was Plano Suzuki rider Charlie Bogard, who won three main events after coming back after a long layoff. In Friday's 125cc main event, American Suzuki{Thor/Spy rider Nick Metcalf took the holeshot, with Bogard on his heels. Metcalf held on to the lead for the first quarter of the race but then made a small mistake, and that was all it took for Bogard to make a run for the lead and stay there. Metcalf stayed strong but couldn't match Bogey's pace through the whoops. Bogard took the win, with Metcalf second. Moto Xtremes/Works/HRP/909/ Maxxis rider Dave Oettel held tight for third. In the Dash For Cash, Metcalf grabbed the holeshot, only to have Bogard give him a love tap, sending Metcalf to the ground and out of the race. Power Motorsports/Fly/Pro Circuit/PJ I/N Style-backed Honda rider S Springfield Arenacross: Dave Oettel won Saturday's 250cc Pro main event in Springfield, Illinois. 50 MARCH 6. 2002' cue I • ne""s Todd DeHoop put his head down and charged to the checkered flag to say, "Show me the money!" Bogard finished second, and Husqvarna rider Oettel was third. "I can use this money," DeHoop said after the race. "We just had a little girl, who is great, and this money is for her." The Freestyle jump-off was just plain wild. Local Overturf/Lowder Extreme Motorsports/Parts Unlimited/HJC/Sullivans rider C.J. Lowder won the event with a combo of jumps and dancing. Bogard turned his bike almost upside down to finish second. Outdoor Wise/FMF/Scott/ 76-backed Kawasaki jockey Scotty Trimble finished third. Metcalf put his American Suzuki out in front in the 250cc main, but Bogard and De Hoop were close behind. Metcalf made a bobble and both Bogard and De Hoop slid by, making for a great race. They stayed close for many laps, trading places, and meanwhile Oettel was gaining on the front pack. Bogard took the win, DeHoop finished second, and Oettel made his way past Metcalf for third, leaving Metcalf fourth. On Saturday, there again appeared to be a four-way battle brewing, between Metcalf, Bogard, DeHoop and Oettel. However, appearances can be deceiving. Bogard's Suzuki gave up the ghost in his 250cc qualifier, taking him out for the night, and Metcalf had trouble keeping it on two wheels all night. This changed everything. Bogard put his Suzuki out in front of the 125cc main and never looked back. Bogard was easily the fastest rider of the weekend; all the action was behind him. Metcalf appeared to be in the fight, but he went down a couple of times, leaving him eighth for the night. Honda of Houston/ Rat Racing/JM Racing/Troy Lee Designs/Renthal-backed Honda rider Ty Conner put in a great ride for second overall. Baker Boy's Yamaha/Star Racing Yamaha rider Jacob Martin held off Oettel for third overall. In Saturday's Dash For Cash, Metcalf nailed the holeshot, but he couldn't hold off PMS Honda rider DeHoop, who took the win and again was very thankful for the money that he'll put aside for his little girl. Conner was third. With Friday night's jump-off winner out (which might have had something to do with him hitting the concrete wall), All American Suzuki/Fox Raci ng/ Aftershocks/Bi II' s Pi pes' Suzuki rider BiIly Jurevich busted out the big moves for the win, with Bogard second and Trimble third. With Bogard watching the 250cc Pro main event from the sidelines, Brian Stone put his Team Green/Shrout' s/M2R/AJpinestars/Cee t-sponsored Kawasaki out front for the holeshot, and it looked like he would go on to take the win. However, Oettel - looking good in his new SoCal gear - made his way past Stone on his Husky and carried on to the win. Stone finished second, with DeHoop third. Bv JEFF KARDAS COLUMBUS, OH, FEB. 2·3 Port Cycles Racing's Mark Burkhart proved once and for all that he is the dominant force in Regional Arenacross racing at the final round of the Mid-America Series in Columbus, Ohio. Burkhart took his nearly box-stock YZFs to a couple of main-event and Dash For Cash wins that typically had him a corner and two straightaways ahead of his nearest competition. S
