Riders from 17 states and South America were on hand to mark the third anniversary of the Monster's opening. In addition, this month's race served as round two of the Southeastern Motocross Series. Practice was held on Saturday, with more than 300 riders present, and the entry list grew to nearly 500 by race time Sunday. In addition to practice all day Saturday, Debbie Matthews' Women's School of Motocross was also in session. The school was well-attended, and many of the ladies took advantage of the opportunity to hone their newfound skills on Sunday, doing quite well in several classes. In the combined 125cc A and B contest, the story was all Bryan Johnson. The Florida hotshoe was untouchable all day. Johnson grabbed the start in race one, ahead of Georgia's Shane Lusk and Floridian Jordan Peeples, and checked out. Lusk and Peeples maintained second and third, respectively, for the entire race, with the only highlight being the charge of B rider Nathan Davenport, who put his KX behind Peeples and hung on the entire moto, easily outdistancing the rest of the B riders. Johnson took an easy victory, topping Lusk, Peeples, Florida's John Melton and Louisiana's Blake Kennedy. In moto two, Johnson again disappeared. Lusk went down midrace and dropped to fifth, behind Peeples, Kennedy and Melton, at race's end. Lusk's 3-5 moto finishes gave him third overall, behind Johnson and the consistent Peeples. Johnson later came back to ace the Schoolboy class in a similar manner. The overall in the B class went to Alabama's Drew Askew. Davenport did not finish moto two, thus negating his first-moto win. This left the door wide open for Askew, and his 3-1 moto finishes gave him the overall. In the 250cc A class, Lusk was on top in both motos. This race was also a combined A-and-B contest, and once again the star was Davenport. B rider Davenport put his KX on Lusk's rear fender and held on the entire race, with the two green bikes handlebar to handlebar out front. Lusk held on to win the first race, but Davenport came out on top in race two. Melton finished second overall to Lusk after the second moto's runner-up, Ohio's Justin Thompson, had to settle for fifth overall due to a disastrous first moto. Florida's Scott Fredricksen took the runner-up spot in the B class, behind Davenport. When the dust cleared after the Mini wars, the results showed Suzuki mounted Jesse Van Patten on top in both the Supermini and 80cc (12-13) classes. What the people on hand saw was an allout war pitting Van Patten against CR-mounted Jase Lewis. The two hotshoes went bar to bar all day long, splitting moto wins in the Supermini class. In the 80cc (12-13) contest, Lewis topped the first moto, but unfortunately problems in the second race dropped him to ninth, depriving the fans of a chance to witness yet another dogfight. Finishing behind Van Patten in the overall tally was Alabarna's James Ragsdale, whose consistent riding kept him in the hunt all day. Ragsdale was third overall in the Supermini as well. Also impressive in the Mini ranks was Ecuador's Martin Davalos. The RM rider from South America swept both the Senior Mini class and the 80cc (14- 15) class. The Junior Mini class showcased two of Georgia's fmest up-and-coming riders. In moto one, Taylor Johnson put his YZ out front and disappeared. Following in second was Ohio's Tony Gallo, ahead of CR-mounted Arthur Cofield. Nursing a severe cold, Cofield could not get going in that moto, and he had to settle for third. Moto two, however, was all Cofield's. Obviously feeling better, Cofield took off, leaVing Johnson to wonder what happened. Cofield easily topped the second moto, but Johnson's 1-2 finishes gave him the overall, ahead of Cofield and Gallo. CN 5R MINI (12·15); I. M.run D.v.los (SUl): 2. Jonathan Dove (Yam); 3.
