Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 8: Rattlesnake Run "I think I just capitalized on other people's mistakes," Maschino said. During the second and third laps, OffRoa d G ro u p /B ri d gestone/TM/ WSR-backed Maschino took the lead. Judson got by him when he took an inside line and left Maschino bobbling on some roots during their fourth lap. Maschino finished the race a minute and 20 seconds ahead of Bloomington Power Sports/IMS/Dunlop/Renthai-backed McCrea. "Once Judson got by me, I followed him for a while, then stopped for my Leader goggles," Maschino said. "After that, I didn't see him anymore. Hats off to him for riding a good, strong race. As for me, I hope I earned enough money to pay for my STORY AND PHOTOS By DEBBIE ALLEN CROFTON, KY, FEB. 3 he 16 AA riders at round eight of the Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series knew it wouldn't be an easy race. Evidence throughout the Crofton Farm's parking lot indicated trouble for the 480 entrants; without a doubt, the Rattlesnake Run was going to be all about mud, ruts and slime. Some of the fastest riders on this side of the country were on hand. They battled among themselves and sifted through the soft, slimy mess with Rodney Judson leading the way. Judson decided early that the AMA/Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/MoosejWhite Brothers-sponsored series would get him in shape for a National, but he had no idea that he was going to be the winner. "I just wanted to get in some practice time for the National Enduro Series that starts out west in two weeks," he admitted. "Plus, I didn't get a very good start, so I thought for sure I would not be in the lead. But I'm here, and it's kind of nicel" He was the last one off the start, but by the end of the nine miles raced, he was in fourth place. The three leaders freight-trained seconds ahead of him, with Doby Leonard leading the pack, followed by Mike McCrea and John Maschino. "This race is just indescribable," said Judson. "The ruts and the lappers sliding everywhere definitely made it difficult for some. You never knew where they would end up. One landed on Doby Leonard, and that's when I got around him, on the second lap." This bumped Judson to third, with Maschino and McCrea pulling the lead. Riding his Gas Ga5 300EX, Judson trimmed the edge off the track to avoid most of the ruts and filtered stayed in third place in the AA clas5 for the rest of the race. Judson then passed Maschino during their third lap. Maschino maintained second place in the AA class. John Maschino plOWed through the mud to plsce second overall In Crofton, Kentucky. MARCH 6, 2002· cue • had plenty of arrows on a fun course. The MSWS riders continue to battle for the lead in the series points. One such battle is in the 200cc A class, between Timmy P'Pool and Marty Stinnett. They are fighting for the series win for first place. Jeremy Ketchum and Derek Bratcher are in third and fourth. With three races left in the series, anything can happen. Chris Brach, Chris Taylor, Adrian Gervais and Mike Hamilton are the top riders so far in 200cc B class, and the 200cc C class has one rider on a mission. Nathan Hammons moved up in points at the Rattlesnake Run and is striving for a top-five finish in his class. At this event, he was riding in eighth place. eN IIIIttiesnake Run Crafton, Kentucky Results: February 3, 2002 (RDund 81 through the mass of Band Criders. Third place in the AA class went to Team Green/Kawasaki-supported McCrea. "It went greatl" McCrea enthused. "I got the holeshot, and Doby passed me about seven miles into the race. He was in the lead for a while, and I got back around him. Later, Judson passed me, I got stuck, and from there on out it was a frustrating day. It was a difficult race because there were so many ruts out there." During the fifth lap, Sarge's Cycle/ Pro Action of Kentucky/Moose/ Smith/Performance Engineeringsponsored Dustin Gibson took advantage of McCrea's misfortune. Riding his American Suzuki in the 250cc/Open A class, he maneuvered into third place overall. Off the 250cc/Open A start, he was the first rider into the woods, and he was briefly passed by Billy Cooper and Clint Robinson. After getting back by them, he made his move for the overall positions. "I'd like to thank my girlfriend and her friends for screaming out there," Gibson said. In spite of cold weather and slime, Steve EzelJ and company put on a great, well-organized race. They were quick to relieve problem areas and O/A: 1. Rodney Judson (GG); 2. John Maschino (TM); 3.
