liant performance for a rider with a . finger injury. "I couldn't get going," Pichon said. "I just could not use my hand on the bike, and I was not going to risk another crash." Pichon elected not to compete in the following Open moto, or the Superfinal. Five-time World Champion Stefan Everts also struggled, finding the heavy sand to make for a tough firstup race of 2002. The defending 500cc champ went 9-8-4 in his three rides. "My arms pumped up really bad," Everts said. "I just could not hold onto the bike. I had the same problems at Hawkstone last year, and also in the first few races of the Grand Prix calendar. I made a fool of myself in those first two races." In the 125cc class, it was Patrick Caps who ruled the roost. Making a return to the KTM team, the Belgian went 1-1 in the two 125cc heats, and then finished with an eighth-place ride in the Superfinal. Second place in the tiddler class went to Dutch sand specialist Mark de Reuver, the Yamaha rider going 3-2 in his matos, then backing that up with a brilliant runner-up ride in the Superfinal, leading home the big four-strokes of the RWJ Honda riders and Everts. Third in the 125cc class was European Champion Kevin Strijbos, who claimed 2-4 results on his Suzuki. American Tallon Vohland had a crash-riddled day, finishing fourth in the 125cc class with 14-3 results. "I don't know all these young kids," Vohland said. "Man, they're fast in the sand. My condition is okay, but I crashed too many times. In the first moto, I was really having trouble; first I had a bad pick of the gate and was near the back going into the first lap· I was crashing all over the place and whatever. In the second mota, I was like last into the first lap and was able to fight my way through to third, so that was pretty good." eN Hewkstone Peril Hewkstonl, Englend Results: Februery 17, 2002 125 MOTa 1: 1.
