FMF/Honda of Houston Winter Series Round 2: Four States MX Park Faur States MX Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAT SPANN Haoles, Texas Results: January 20, 2002 (Round 21 AND THE BECKSTER HOOKS, TX, JAN. 20 erren O'Dell of Arkansas tore up the turf in both the 65cc (10- 11 ) and 65cc Open events at round two of the second annual FMF/Honda of Houston Winter Racing Series. Four States MX Park played host to 424 entered riders, and Caleb Dowell, Kyle Phenix and Chuck Bosone joined O'Dell in the double-win column. O'Dell started his day off by grab· bing the holes hot in the first 65cc (10-11) moto, chased by Hunter Hewitt of Texas. Alabama's Alex Covington raced in third, followed by Louisiana's Dillon Solly and Austin Humbard of Arkansas. At the top of lap two, Hewitt had closed in on O'Dell, dogging his every move into lap three before taking over the lead in the front section of the track by the start. O'Dell bobbled in a corner and lost valuable seconds as Hewitt went off to find the checkered flag. O'Dell absconded with the holeshot in the second moto, followed by Solly and Hewitt. When Solly went down on jump eight, Hewitt was there Terren O'Dell (7) and Hunter Hewitt (26) battled one another in the 65cc 11G-11) class at the second round of the second annual FMFIHonda of Houston Winter Series. O'Dell emerged the overall victor. score. Wesley Ethridge of Mississippi finished second with a 2-3 score to Hewitt's 7 -2 tally for third. Caleb Dowell put his Cobra out front with ease in the 16-rider 51 cc Open event, chased by Mason Maahs. Brandon Glenn gated third and held that position into the final lap before a hard-charging Tyler Stewart made the pass into third and held it to the finish, forcing Glenn to take fourth. Luke Tankersley rounded out fifth. Dowell repeated his performance in moto two, with Maahs Once again in the hunt in second. Glenn started third, but Stewart made a pass on lap two for the position and kept it tight to the checkered flag. Dowell also topped the 51 cc (7 -8) class. The 80cc Open class had a 38rider gate. Texas transplant Sean Hackley Jr. led the first moto off the gate, in front of Bradley Graham of New Mexico. Hackley held the point position from start to finish, with Graham taking the runner-up spot and Texan Taylor Painter finishing third. In the second moto, Painter led the field with Graham in second, followed by Dustin Shows and Ronny Jackson. By the end of the second lap, O'Dell held a 15-second lead over Hewitt. Covington raced in third, followed by Dakota Flores and Andrew Phillips. Humbard went from sixth to fourth after battling with Flores, and though Flores kept Humbard in sight, he couldn't put a pass on him before the end of the race. O'Dell used his 2-1 tally for the overall. Hewitt (1-2) was second and Covington (4-3) was third. O'Dell took his second win in the 65cc Open class with a perfect 1- 1 42 MARCH 6, 2002' cue I • n e vv s Kyle Phenix (16) finished second overall in the 250cc Open class but claimed the overall wins in both the 125cc and 250cc Novice ranks. Jackson got around Shows as Hackley worked diligently from a bad start toward the front of the pack to fifth On lap two. The top five immediately engaged in an all-out war, with JackSOn all over Graham's rear fender, while Hackley made his attack On Shows and passed into fourth over jump eight. By the last lap, the backof-the-pack riders were being caught by the front-runners. Graham got by Painter when Painter got caught up among the lappers. Painter went to the outside, and then the inside. •All I know is, I went from first to fourth in less than two seconds," Painter said later. Graham took the win, followed by Hackley, who got around Jackson on the final lap, followed by Shows. Painter was a knobby behind Shows. Graham took the overall win by way of a 2-1 finish. Hackley (1-2) was second. Painter (3-5) salvaged third overall. Chance Worrell (4-7) claimed fourth, and Hunter Hewitt (5-8) rounded out fifth. eN 51 (4-6): 1. Hunter Sistrunk (KTM): 2.
