Thundercross Motorsports Park Frankly, It's Franklin By CRAIG JOHNSON OKEECHOBEE, FL. JAN. 20 Rand Franklin, feeling the power of his 1974 KX250, rumbled to his second victory in the Vintage 250cc/500cc AlB class. Franklin had some stiff competition at Thundercross Motor· sports Park, site of the second round of the Florida Vintage MX Series. The beautiful, sunny weather in south·central Florida brought out many riders to this grassy, natur· ai-terrain course. Bultaco's Gary Rosse got the jump on the field in the combined first moto of the Vintage 250cc/500cc A, Band C contest. Rosse won the moto over Franklin, with Robbie Brantley. CZ-mounted J.P. I • n • _ s Trac Arena Kopp Comes Home. By SMI HALBERT PASCO, WA, FEB. 1-2 At the start of the Pro motorcycle main event, BBRP/Circle F Frames/Steve Baker/Nymo Plates/Maxima-sponsored Dan Stanley jumped out to an early lead, with Denny Lopp/O'Brien Racing/Dick's Suzuki-sponsored Joe Kopp right on his tail. National number 10, Stanley, and National number three (and last year's dirt track Grand National Champion), Kopp, pulled a small lead from the rest of the pack, and they diced it out for the rest of the race. Stanley had the edge over Kopp at the end of the race. Sam Halbert finished third and was lucky enough to get out ahead of the chaos that went on behind him. Veteran rider Chris Fitzhugh used some of his experience to work his way up to the fourth position, with Idaho's Jeff Russell rounding out the top five. "I found out Thursday," Stanley said after winning the race, "that I have a Harley·Oavidson 750cc ride, from Skip Eaken this coming Grand National season, on the mile tracks." In the Open motorcycle main event, Tom Simpson led nearly the whole race until Derick Oquist came around the outside to finish the pass just in time, on the last tum of the last lap. Shane Hudgins rounded out the top three. On Saturday night, Kopp once again had the pole position, but when the flag flew, Fitzhugh jumped out ahead, with Kopp and a whole lot of hungry Pros champing at the bit right behind him. Kopp eventually went underneath Fitzhugh to run away with the win. On the next lap, Boise, Idaho's Jeff Russell railed around the outside of Fitzhugh to secure the second position. After fighting his way through the crowd from a back-row start, Stanley placed his motorcycle underneath Fitzhugh, clearing a path for Jethro Halbert to also pass Fitzhugh on the inside. Fitzhugh then rounded out the top five. "Fitzhugh got the holeshot and I just went easy the first few laps, until he went outside and I just snuck it undemeath him," Kopp said after winning the race. "This is one of the best tracks and facilities that I have ever raced on. I wanted to come here so I could test my hands. I was pretty satisfied; they were just a little sore. I am really happy to get to race with the locals; I don't get a chance to do that very often anymore, and I think that we have another good batch of Northwest riders coming up the ranks." eN Results Friday VINT; 1.
