rew Gosselaar, the youngest of
four brothers that make up the
Gosselaar racing clan, had a stellar
day at Los Angeles County Raceway,
where he swept both the 85cc (12-13)
and Supermini classes during the California Racing Club-sponsored opening round of the fourth annual California Gold Cup Motocross Series.
Shawn Hayes started off the day
with the 85cc (12-13) class holeshot,
ahead of Gosselaar, Jason Parsons
and the rest of the field. Within a lap,
Gosselaar was out front and pulling
away. Hayes ended up finishing
the runner-up, a safe distance ahead
of Freistat, who went 4-3 to top the
3-4 score of Costa for third overall.
Supermini action was more of the
same. Gosselaar put his Suzuki
Sport/ Axo/FMF /Scott/Dun lopbacked RM80 into hyperdrive and
scorched both motos for easy wins.
Hayes put in a couple of excellent
rides but had to be content with
another second-place trophy on 2-2
finishes. Austin Boyd went 3-3 for
third, ahead of Curtis McLellan (7 -5)
and Jonathan Hornbeck (6-6).
Dana Drier argued with Tanner
Langham over the lead in the first
85cc (0-11) moto for a couple of laps
before inching away for the win.
Shaun Butler and Danny Gonzalez
took turns running third, with Butler
Shawn Hayes grabs the holeshot in the combined 85cc contest at the opening
round of the Callfomla Gold Cup Motocross Series. Drew Gosselaar (73) topped the
85cc (12-13) class and Beau Wiegand (72) scored the 85cc (14-16) victory.
Derek Costella ran off with the win In
the 250cc Intermediate class at Los
Angeles County Raceway.
second to Gosselaar, some 10 seconds off the pace. Third went to Cory
Costa, followed by Travis Freistat and
J.B. Peek.
Moto two was a duplicate of the
first. Gosselaar escaped with an early
lead that would increase with each
passing lap. Hayes was once again
getting the upper hand on the last lap
when it counted the most.
Gonzalez held off Drier for the first
two circuits of moto two before Drier
found some daylight and went around
him for a perfect 1-1 showing. Langham trailed Gonzalez across the line
for second overall on a 2-3 tally.
Gonzalez (4-2), Taylor Kellstrom (64) and Nolan Shultz (5-6) rounded
out the top five.
The 125cc Intermediate first-moto
holeshot belonged to Anthony Barbacovi. who immediately came under
fire from Donnie Durrer, c.J. Mahon
and Derek Costella. Durrer made his
way into the top spot, only to pull off
after a lap when his knee popped out.
Mahon inherited the lead, while
Costella crashed himself back to seventh place. Mahon continued on
to lead every lap for the victory.
Costella climbed back up into
second place and was closing in on
Mahon until time ran out. Caleb Gosselaar passed Barbacovi on the last
lap for second place.
Mahon and Costella went at it over
the second-moto lead on their
Suzukis until Costella encountered
problems and dropped out of the race
NIkki Puentes went 2-1 for the
Women's-class victory In Palmdale,
California.
Flowers fought his way up from an
11th-place start to earn the firstplace trophy on a consistent 2-3
showing. Second place went to
Quimette (5-1), followed by Fullmer
(4-2) and Boyle (3-4).

on lap three. Mahon swept the
field on his TRE/FX/EVS/Answersponsored RM 125. Gosselaar rode
the lone Honda in the field to 3-2 finishes for second overall. Barbacovi
finished fourth, behind Durrer, for
third overall.
Costella returned to lead every lap
of the first 250cc Intermediate race
aboard his FMF /PCS/Spy / Axobacked RM250. Josh Bagge held off
Shane Smith for second. Jon Zahrt
and Jeremy Ferro finished fourth and
fifth, respectively.
Smith got the holeshot in round
two, while Costella was buried in the
pack. Costella picked off the competition until only Smith was left in front
of him on lap four. A lap later,
Costella was out front, where he
stayed for the duration. Smith's runner-up performance edged out Bagge
(2-3) for second overall.
Kyle Jones put in a flawless ride to
lead every lap of the first 125cc
Novice moto, ahead of Matt Elliott
and Jimmy Gonzalez. Ivan Shultz got
stuck in traffic in moto one and could
only muster a 17th-place finish, but
he more than made up for it by going
wire to wire for the second-moto win.
Jones climbed his way up into a second-place finish to claim the overall
honors. Jason Monahan (5-3) was
second, with Travis Taylor (4-6)
coming out on top of a points tie with
Gonzalez (3-7) and Elliott (2-8)
for third.
A huge turnout of 85cc Beginners
necessitated the running of two divisions, with Richard Chandler and
Tim Ritzier splitting moto wins in
Division One racing. Justin Carmody
went 2-2 for second overall, behind
Chandler (3-1).
Andrew Jones passed David Boyle
for the Division Two lead at the midway point of moto one and continued
on for the win. Joey Flowers came
from out of the pack to slip past
Boyle on the final lap for second
place. Zack Fullmer led the first half
of moto two before Chandler
Quimette dropped him back to second place, where he would finish.
