California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 1: Los Angeles County Raceway STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PAlJoIDALE, CA, JAN. 27 rew Gosselaar, the youngest of four brothers that make up the Gosselaar racing clan, had a stellar day at Los Angeles County Raceway, where he swept both the 85cc (12-13) and Supermini classes during the California Racing Club-sponsored opening round of the fourth annual California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Shawn Hayes started off the day with the 85cc (12-13) class holeshot, ahead of Gosselaar, Jason Parsons and the rest of the field. Within a lap, Gosselaar was out front and pulling away. Hayes ended up finishing the runner-up, a safe distance ahead of Freistat, who went 4-3 to top the 3-4 score of Costa for third overall. Supermini action was more of the same. Gosselaar put his Suzuki Sport/ Axo/FMF /Scott/Dun lopbacked RM80 into hyperdrive and scorched both motos for easy wins. Hayes put in a couple of excellent rides but had to be content with another second-place trophy on 2-2 finishes. Austin Boyd went 3-3 for third, ahead of Curtis McLellan (7 -5) and Jonathan Hornbeck (6-6). Dana Drier argued with Tanner Langham over the lead in the first 85cc (0-11) moto for a couple of laps before inching away for the win. Shaun Butler and Danny Gonzalez took turns running third, with Butler Shawn Hayes grabs the holeshot in the combined 85cc contest at the opening round of the Callfomla Gold Cup Motocross Series. Drew Gosselaar (73) topped the 85cc (12-13) class and Beau Wiegand (72) scored the 85cc (14-16) victory. Derek Costella ran off with the win In the 250cc Intermediate class at Los Angeles County Raceway. second to Gosselaar, some 10 seconds off the pace. Third went to Cory Costa, followed by Travis Freistat and J.B. Peek. Moto two was a duplicate of the first. Gosselaar escaped with an early lead that would increase with each passing lap. Hayes was once again getting the upper hand on the last lap when it counted the most. Gonzalez held off Drier for the first two circuits of moto two before Drier found some daylight and went around him for a perfect 1-1 showing. Langham trailed Gonzalez across the line for second overall on a 2-3 tally. Gonzalez (4-2), Taylor Kellstrom (64) and Nolan Shultz (5-6) rounded out the top five. The 125cc Intermediate first-moto holeshot belonged to Anthony Barbacovi. who immediately came under fire from Donnie Durrer, c.J. Mahon and Derek Costella. Durrer made his way into the top spot, only to pull off after a lap when his knee popped out. Mahon inherited the lead, while Costella crashed himself back to seventh place. Mahon continued on to lead every lap for the victory. Costella climbed back up into second place and was closing in on Mahon until time ran out. Caleb Gosselaar passed Barbacovi on the last lap for second place. Mahon and Costella went at it over the second-moto lead on their Suzukis until Costella encountered problems and dropped out of the race NIkki Puentes went 2-1 for the Women's-class victory In Palmdale, California. Flowers fought his way up from an 11th-place start to earn the firstplace trophy on a consistent 2-3 showing. Mahon swept the field on his TRE/FX/EVS/Answersponsored RM 125. Gosselaar rode the lone Honda in the field to 3-2 finishes for second overall. Barbacovi finished fourth, behind Durrer, for third overall. Costella returned to lead every lap of the first 250cc Intermediate race aboard his FMF /PCS/Spy / Axobacked RM250. Josh Bagge held off Shane Smith for second. Jon Zahrt and Jeremy Ferro finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Smith got the holeshot in round two, while Costella was buried in the pack. Costella picked off the competition until only Smith was left in front of him on lap four. A lap later, Costella was out front, where he stayed for the duration. Smith's runner-up performance edged out Bagge (2-3) for second overall. Kyle Jones put in a flawless ride to lead every lap of the first 125cc Novice moto, ahead of Matt Elliott and Jimmy Gonzalez. Ivan Shultz got stuck in traffic in moto one and could only muster a 17th-place finish, but he more than made up for it by going wire to wire for the second-moto win. Jones climbed his way up into a second-place finish to claim the overall honors. Jason Monahan (5-3) was second, with Travis Taylor (4-6) coming out on top of a points tie with Gonzalez (3-7) and Elliott (2-8) for third. A huge turnout of 85cc Beginners necessitated the running of two divisions, with Richard Chandler and Tim Ritzier splitting moto wins in Division One racing. Justin Carmody went 2-2 for second overall, behind Chandler (3-1). Andrew Jones passed David Boyle for the Division Two lead at the midway point of moto one and continued on for the win. Joey Flowers came from out of the pack to slip past Boyle on the final lap for second place.
