Dave Coupe Classic Series Round 1: EStreet Bridge Track Evan Laughridge and the E Street Sand By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS MARYSVlUE, CA, DEC. 16 A rmed with a pair of American Suzuki/Roseville Cycle/Thor/ FMF-backed Suzukis, Evan Laughridge aced all four 125cc and 250cc Pro motos at round one of the Dave Coupe Classic Series, which drew more than 450 riders. The E Street Bridge track, alongside the picturesque Feather River, is 100-percent pure sand and. as expected. it turns into a stamina-robbing. whooped-out monster that requires every ounce of a rider's energy _ And that's how promoter Dave Coupe wanted it. Coupe, who contested Supercr05s and the Nationals aboard a factorybacked Maleo in the early 1980s, is in his sixth year of promoting races at the seldom-used E Street Bridge track, and it reminds him of his glory days riding a rough, natural-terrain course_ "I'm the only one who runs out here. and I'm only putting on three races this year," said Coupe. "I think the sand brings 'em out. and the fact that although this track is here year 'round. it only gets prepped this nice when we're here. The Azevedos, Jack and Corky of AMP Racing, helped with the track prep and brought out their sign-up and scoring crew. Everything went very well today. and lowe them a big thanks." The first moto of the day featured the 250cc Pros. Laughridge was out in front of the 14-rider field early on. Despite a recent injury, Laughridge looked smooth on every lap, and despite a fierce challenge from Daniel Blair, Laughridge managed to hold him off at the checkers. "I got hurt at the Mini O's in Florida a few weeks ago. so I'm out here today a little dinged up." Laughridge said. "Besides a little arm pump, I felt pretty good. and Blair kept me motivated. If the moto was another lap or two, I don't know if I could have held him off." Aboard a Powerhouse/Thor/Big Gun/DC Shoes-backed Yamaha YZ426F, Blair had tucked in right behind Laughridge on the start and hounded the Suzuki pilot tum to tum. However, finding a smooth line was difficult, and Blair just couldn't find a spot to make a pass. The two were so evenly matched that a mere bike length was all that separated them at the checkers. "If I could have got around him. I know I would have won," Blair said. "I made a few mistakes, and I think that cost me." Scott Davis was a distant third. Davis gated well but just couldn't match the leaders' speed, yet he held his position the entire race. Matt McCrummen and Craig Truglio rounded out the top five. In moto two. Honda-mounted Shawn McDonald grabbed the early lead, with Laughridge, Davis and Blair hot on his tail. Laughridge 50 (4-6) 5TK: quickly displaced McDonald for the lead and Davis was right there with him. but suddenly he went down hard over a small double_ Blair assumed second_ Laughridge began to pull away. Back around midpack, McCrummen was on a tear, and he made his way up to fifth. It soon became a battle for third between McDonald. Truglio and McCrummen. Apparently. McCrummen had the sand figured out, and he got by both riders quickly _ Laughridge took a convincing win, while Blair checked in with another solid runner-up finish_ McCrummen was third and third overall on the day. Truglio held off McDonald for fourth. While Laughridge repeated his domination in both 125cc Pro motos by taking uncontested back-to-back wins, McCrummen turned in a solid performance, taking second overall on the day with a 2-3 effort_ Recovering from a hard get-off in practice the day before, the Oakley Sport/TCR/ IRS/Posey Racing-backed rider utilized a pair of good starts in both motos and never let up. "Laughridge was going fast today, and I tried my best to reel him in," said McCrummen. "I was aggressive and on the gas in both motos, and it paid off." !?avis, Truglio and Jesse Duncan rounded out the top five on the day. Missing from the top finishers list was Colorado's Joshua Hansen. The DHMA/Thousand Oaks/Axo/Pro Circuit-backed rider appeared to have the speed to challenge Laughridge, but hard crashes early in both motos kept the youngster out of the running. "I came out with my dad, who just had a school at the Marysville track," said Hansen. "Capitol Cycles lent me a bike, and even though I have a banged-up hand, I figured I'd give it a shot. The last time I rode on this track. I think I was on a 60. It's tough riding a borrowed bike, because on a track like this. the suspension setup is so critica I. " Eric Nye destroyed the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. The Yamaha pilot wa5 unstoppable and garnered huge wins in all four motos_ Joey Rodriguez (5-2) took runner-up honors in the 250cc Intermediate class, while Matt Barber (3-2) finished behind Nye in the 125cc Intermediate class. eN Sach~r Colombini (KTM); 3.
