Hangover Grand Prix Honey Lake Motocross Park The brother-and-sister team of Kayeleiann and Justin Soule demonstrated their moto skills. Justin shifted into "mentor mode" and showed his big sister exactly how it's done but that left him with barely enough time to suit up. He still easily placed first in the BOcc class. Dakota Neuffer, who is far from new to either the racing scene or to Honey Lake, produced a convincing secondplace finish in the 65cc class, right behind an ecstatic Joshua Morros. The morning qualifiers were physically challenging and demanding even for those who weren't victims of the mysterious "New Year's 24-Hour Bug." Once the four-row start was set and ready to go for the two-hour grand prix, guys and girls charged head-first into the grueling main event. Honey Lake 250cc Pro-class regular Steve Marty got off to a very slow start due to a stubborn bike. Cheers of elation could be heard from clear across the track as he came out of the argument with his bike victorious and got her started up again. Despite a three-lap loss. he and his teammate Ryan McElfish (both are from Reno, Nevada) went on to place 36th overall. The exciting format featured 40-minute qualifiers to determine in what row riders would start in the two-hour premier grand prix. The day started off with the Open class. Spectators were treated to a battle between Team Green's Shane Esposito, ESPN X-Games gold medalist Shaun Palmer, and local Pro rider Matt Bussell. Esposito held nothing back, grabbing the holeshot and maintaining the lead for the entire moto fior the win. Muddy and barely recognizable. Palmer cruised in second. Bussell, demonstrating his signature "moto theatrics," literally jumped into third place after being stuck in the back of the pack after the first tum. Two noteworthy riders in the 125cc class were Daryll Haney and Craig Olson. After placing first and seventh, respectively, in their morning qualifiers, they went on to score a well-deserved second-place finish in the grand prix. Utah's Chris Maas finished second in the 125cc class, and Nevada's Jeff Kline took third. Dave Wood grabbed the holeshot and led for a few turns before Wosick passed him and then stretched his lead to nearly one minute by moto's end. Wood rode to a conservative second-place finish, saving his energy for the two-hour grand prix - which he would contest without a partner! Bud Heishman of Snowind Sports in Reno, Nevada. finished third. The 65cc and BOcc classes took to the track, displaying the enthusiasm that is indicative of young, aspiring motocrossers - totally oblivious to the fact that three 40-minute motos had already been run on the track. Rory Packwood. who placed eighth in her class and who is ranked third nationally. came off the track declaring. "My bike bogged up. but the mud is awesome!" I e neVIl's At the completion of the two-hour event, it was ironman Dave Wood who took home the huge Champions Cup and the title. The attendees were not only treated to a world-class racecourse, they also enjoyed the two large bonfires provided while hot chocolate and some great food was served up by the Milford 4H youth group. The event proved to be a wonderful fund-raiser for the 4H kids, and the entire day was an injury-free success. eN Hooy l.8Ile Motocross Putl Milfwll. Califomia Results: January 1. 2002 65: 1.
