BRIEFLY••• As mentioned in the lead, KTM tried dividing up its factory rid- ers into four different groups In an effort to create somewhat of a rivalry in the absence of BMW, One of the teams within the team was Gauloises KTM (rightJ, which received sponsorship from the French cigarette company, As French laws limit tobacco advertising, the team's blue bikes had their Gauloises logos removed dunng the French stages, In their place were Gol! I!I I! logos. Rally veteran Jordi Arcarons announced at the finish that this would be his final Dakar Rally on a motorcycle, though he would like to remain involved in some capacity. The Spaniard seemed most interested in managing a team. and it would be no surprise to see him leading RepsolfTelefonica KTM next year, though some pundits predicted he'd compete In a car. After G,ovani Sala got hit with a time penalty that some thought should have been assessed to his teammate Fabrizio Meoni (see sidebar), Sala got out a Magic Marker and modified his number 7 . Several black Afncans look part In the rally, Including female racer Youma Tall· the first-ever black female to compele. Tall unfortunately broke her knee and failed to finish, but a couple of the Afncans did make it to Dakar. KTM awarded its riders with a tiny mini bike for every stage they won, and AI~e Cox was perhaps happiest to pick up a pair of the cool bikes. The South African has a four-year·old son, and he's been pestering dad to go riding (Cox had already arranged for a set of tiny riding gear through sponsor Acerbis). Four-strokes are obViously the bikes of chOice for rally racing, but there were a couple of masochists who entered on two-strokes. One guy even entered on a KTM 125, but he didn't come close to finishing. Sorry, Red Bull: Apparently not an addict to energy drinks. big Finn Kan Tiainen (right) religiously sucks down a beer at the end of each stage. S/PROO 250-: 1. Luiz Mingione (Hon).
