So much so that he went out and pulled a "double dip," winning both the 80cc Stock and Open classes at Rainbow Canyon in Elgin, Nevada, on December 8. His biggest challenge was in the 80cc Stock class, in which he locked homs with the hard-charging Jeagher La Fountaine, a racer in the Bob Hannah mold. When the first race stepped off, Axo/FMF/Desert Motorsports' Esposito nailed the holeshot. La Fountaine, Jena Ellis and Travis Farnsworth were right behind him. Esposito opened it up, but La Fountaine stayed right with him, and the two leaders put some dust between themselves and the rest of the pack. Midway through the race, Esposito dumped it and La Fountaine took over with a big lead. Esposito recovered and started charging back, while Ellis was hoiding off furious assaults from R.J. Kemple for third place. Esposito continued to close in, and the whiteflag lap was a bang-bang affair, with La Fountaine holding on for a close win. Kemple worked his way around Ellis for third, while Farnsworth streaked through the pipes in fifth. Fox/Maxima/Excel/Dragon-backed La Fountaine smoked the start of race two, leading Esposito and Kemple through the first turn. La Fountaine and Esposito got it on right away, with Kemple hanging in until he crashed over the back doubles. Esposito passed for the lead at the start of lap two, but La Fountaine wouldn't go away, hammering on him for several laps until sliding out while trying to make a pass for the lead. Without the pressure, Esposito cruised to the win to sew up the 80cc Stock overall crown. La Fountaine recovered to take a close second overall, ahead of Kemple, Ellis, Farnsworth and E.J. Rogers. The] 25cc combined race was a corporate affair. All those that were supposed to win, did. Derek Costella beat everyone. Then again, he should have. The 125cc Intermediate rider - who is sponsored by Spy, PCS, FMF, Pro Action, Parts Direct, and almost anyone else with an eye for motocross talent - is a national-caliber racer who can moto with the best. Josh La Fountaine won the 125cc Novice class. He has only been on the bigger bike for a short time, but he brings awesome credentials with him from the 80cc class. And Aaron Byrd won the 125cc Beginner class, as he seems to do on a regular basis. Maybe "A-Ron" should bring his Husky up to play with the big dogs in the Novice class. CA, DEC. 15 Mud just complicates motocross racing, and the only thing worse is to have both rain and mud together. It rained the day before but fortunately there was only mud on race day - lots and lots of it. Many of the ROTMXers came out and looked things over and then ieft, but 27 brave (or foolhardy?) souls stuck it out. Master-class racer Steve Donaldson showed everyone he really knows a thing or two about the fine art of mud racing. Despite all the gooey stuff. his double and triple jumps were as impressive as ever and his speed cinched the moto win. Dave Eropkin also put out plenty of might and power, capturing sec~ and. Eropkin started out with a holeshot start in moto two and things didn't slow down until the win was his. Michael Neal's racing was good and fast and qualified him as runner-up. An action-packed Expert race began with Colin Birtles out in front for two laps. Then Dan Willenborg pushed his Honda four-stroke through all the mud and past Birtles. Willenborg continued to lead until the very last lap. Then Larry Fisher muscled past and raced swiftly on to the finish. Willenborg chased him in with second, and BirtJes followed. Willenborg came out in fine style in moto two, ieading for three iaps - and then he took a mud bath. Fisher was right there to take over, and nothing came between him and another first-place finish. It was Fisher's first racing day as an Expert, and he certainly raced that way. Birtles started poorly but worked his way up to second, and Terry Tate compieted the podium. Ted Jenkins was out in front of all the other Over 40 Amateurs until John Timmer- Speed 11:30 PM By BOB ALLOY Speed 1/29/2002 Kompleski Cleans Up at Mud-In Speed 1/29/2002 Competition Park Speed 1/29/2002 (Yom). 80 OPEN; I.
