About half of those came on this wet, dreary Sunday, against some of the fastest Mini rac· ers in the state, including Shawn Haberlock, Greg Fouts. Jake Anstett. Corey Bloom and Blake Anglen. to name just a few. Villopoto's toughest competition came in the 85cc (12-15) class. Qualifying went pretty much perfectly for him, but in the main it was a different story. Haberlock got out of the gate the fastest, followed by Villopoto and Ajay Olinger. Villopoto and Haberlock battled the entire race, putting on quite a show, clearing the two 70-foot doubles as they pulled away from the rest of the field. Villopoto finally moved into first at the halfway point, and after that he never looked back. leaving the KXmounted Haberlock to finish the race in sec· ond. Trailing the duo was Bloom. One of the most exciting races of the day was the 85cc Beginner class. Brandon Hess took the first heat win, and in the second heat, it was all Teddy Coburn. In the main, Justin Thompson absconded with the holeshot, with Coburn and Chris Currie in tow. By the third lap, Cobum had gotten out into the lead and was putting a huge lead on everyone else. Most of the attention was focused on the riders from second through fifth, as they were in a tight pack, battling the whole race. At the checkered flag, the order was Cobum, Dustin Steward. Currie, Nick Sundby, and the Hondamounted Hess. In 50cc action, Frace was the most dominant rider. as he totally swept the 50cc (7-9) and 50cc Open classes, beating the likes of Brody Thom and Nash Blaylock. Los Angeles County Raceway One More for Ashmore Bv GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,DEC.9 For the second week in a row, YZ125 rider Jeff Ashmore came out on top of Califomia Racing Club's 125cc Novice class at Los Angeles County Raceway. Close to 350 riders did battle on the Saddle Glen track during round two of the annual three-race Trophy Series in hopes of eaming one of the awesome 5-foot trophies awarded to the series class winners. Brett Klein and his Mid-Cities-backed Honda led every inch for the first-moto win. Ashmore gated in second place and challenged Klein throughout the moto but couldn't pull off a pass. Steven Figueroa, Jason Mona· han, Len Elwell and Lester Varnum were all over each other for third place, with Monahan prevailing in the end over Elwell and Varnum. Ashmore shot into an immediate second· moto lead. Klein overshot the first turn and found himself at the back of the pack. The moto was all Ashmore's, as the Bakersfield Yamaha/Scott-sponsored rider went wire to wire to sew up the overall on a 2-1 tally. Varnum's strong second-moto runner-up perfor· mance earned him the second-place trophy, over the 4-4 score of Elwell and the 6-3 tally of Figueroa. c.J. Mahon and Bryan Watson argued over the 125cc Intermediate first-moto lead until a bobble on the part of Watson dropped him to a third-place finish. behind Anthony Barbacovi. Mahon snared the holeshot in round two, but within a lap Watson was out front and pulling away for the win. Mahon's secondplace finish was good enough for the overall honors, topping the 3-1 score of Watson and the 2-3 tally of Barbacovi. Mahon and Watson returned to do battle in the Schoolboy class. Mahon went 2-1 to edge out the 1-2 score of Watson for his second class victory of the day. Barbacovi was third both times out. over the 4·4 score of Darin Chisholm and the 5-5 finishes of Vamum. Shane Smith flew his Answer/EVS/N-stylebacked CRF450R to three wins out of four motos entered to top both the Four-Stroke and 250cc Intermediate classes. Patrick Wade's 3-2 tally nipped the 2-4 score of Jeremy Ferro for second overall in the thumper ranks, with Corey Murphy (2-3) picking up the second-place brass in the Intermediate class over Donnie Durrer (3-4) and Shawn Trabert (9-1 ). VANCOUVER, WA, DEC. 15 Curtis Wharton had a bit of luck over the weekend. handily winning both the Over The Hill and Four-Stroke classes at round four of the Promoto Promotions Clark County Are· nacross series. Other double·c1ass winners included Andy Page in the 250cc Intermediate and Before The Hill classes, Jon Sheriffs in the 250cc Beginner and Vet Beginner classes, Brad Frace in the 50cc (7-9) and 50cc Open classes, Landon Currier in the 65cc (9-11) and 65cc Open classes, and Ryan Villopoto in the 85cc (12-15), 85cc Open, and Supermini classes. In Vet Sport qualifying, Todd Knoepper easily took the win, followed by Wharton and Gavin Washburn. In the main, it looked like the order would be the same, with Knoepper in the lead, followed by Wharton and Washburn. Looks can be deceiving. though, as Wharton proved with a exclamation point by passing Knoepper on the last lap, just before the finish line. Washbum, Phil Davis and Mike Nieto rounded out the top five. Villopoto has proved to everyone that he is truly a national-level rider. In the previous two weeks, he has won every moto he entered. In the past two events alone, he won 14 motos. Results 50 OIL·INJ: I. Sinjin stroupe (Yom); 2. Levi Gillis (Yem); 3. Tolyn Taylor (KTM); 4. Jordan Thibedeau (Han); 5. T~y Johnson (Kaw). 50 BEG. I.
