flag came out, Merrill took his fourth firstplace finish of the day, after also going I-I in the 125cc Novice A class. Silk came in second, and Marro was a close third. Lacerenza took fourth, which was good enough to earn second place overall for the day. All the attention the other riders were getting didn't bother Venza one bit, because he knew that he raced every race and earned enough points to earn the overall win of the season. While Chris Garcia pulled out a huge lead in the 80cc Beginner class, the battle for second was tough. Casey Montoya and Kevin Beaks battled the entire moto. These two were amazing, changing positions several times, but in the end it was Montoya taking second, with Beaks third. In the second mota, Garcia again pulled the holeshot and stayed in the lead the entire moto. No one could catch him; he was hot. During this moto, Beaks and Montoya battled again. Montoya was trying to get around Beaks to take second. Somehow Beaks managed to stay in front to take second, giving him second overall. Montoya took thjrd and third overall. The 80cc First- Timers and one 80cc girl all battled together. Eric Rizzo led from lap one to the end of the first moto. Further back, a battle for position was going on between Eric Ballejos, Chase Schroeder, Chelsey Ballard and Jarrett Loop. At the completion of mota one, Ballejos was second, Loop was third, Ballard placed fourth and Schroeder finishe3d fifth. In moto two, Rizzo again absconded with the holeshot and pulled a huge lead en route to taking first overall. The entire mota featured a battle between Ballard and Ballejos. Ballard did a great job of hanging in there and battling with the boys. She was right behind Ballejos the entire mota, giving everything she had to try to get by. On Long Island, it is usually pretty safe to have races up until mid-November, but December's a long shot. This was the last race of the season at Long Island Cycle Park, and the weather was crisp and clear, with not a cloud in the sky. Many riders came from other areas, as their own seasons ended in November. As the riders and spectators poured through the gates of Long Island Cycle Park for the last race of the season, the pits filled up quickly. The chill in the air didn't stop the riders, their families or friends from enjoying another race event. When the Schoolboy class took off from the gate, Joe Merrill Jr. got he holeshot aboard his Yamaha and pulled a good lead. Ron Venza Jr., also aboard a Yamaha, came around the tum in second, with Nick Lacerenza close behind him on his own Yamaha. Merrill kept a clean lead as the Yamahas raced around the track. When the gate dropped for the second mota, Merrill took the holes hot again, with Honda rider Robert Silk Jr., Yamaha-mounted Frank Marro. Lacerenza, Kawasaki jockey David Walters, and Venza battling for the second~place position. Everyone watched in amazement as Merrill pulled an awesome lead. After having missed most of the season due to a double compound fracture of the forearm and a concussion, Merrill has recently made a strong comeback. As the checkered e n e _ SO P/W (4.8): 1. Greenville Convention Center No Tarrying for Gillim By KERRI GILLII'I GREENVILLE, KY, DEC. 9 Steve Nace Racing Promotions did it again. Some 325 entries for f1at~track and IT racing made for an action· packed Sunday at Greenville Indoor Convention Center. Hayden Gillim couldn't be stopped - despite riding with a cast on his throttle hand. The 50cc Chain class had 10 riders in two rows in the main. Jake Lewis broke off the line first, with Gillim on the outside going through turn one. Coming out of turn two, Gillim made a strong pass to take the lead. It didn't take the two Cobra riders long to come up on lapped riders. Gillim made his way through the pack easier than Lewis, giving Gillim the win. In the 65cc class, the seven bikes were tight on the starting line. When the light turned green, Chaz Landers came off the line first, but Frankie Lee Gillim and Hayden Gillim dived under to take him in the first turn. The Gillim boys finished in front, with Hayden first and Frankie Lee second. "I am really excited about both wins," Hay~ den sajd when asked how it felt to win two classes with a broken right hand. "I want to win the points. " The Open Pro had 16 riders. Only 10 would go to the main, which made for an exciting two~row start. In the first start, they went five-wIde into the first tum. Some bikes made contact, causing a restart. With the competitive nature of real motorcycle racers, you can't have a race without some trash talk, and this made for some interesting pit action for the spectators. On the second start, there was a four-bike pile-up in the first turn, which only made each rider more determined to win. The third start was a staggered start. Jeff Landrum got to the turn first, with Chris Boone second, but D'ean Faulkner (with Aaron Ladd right on his rear tire) forced Boone wide. Boone and Ladd battled side by side down the back straightaway, with Boone taking over third. Landrum ended up having an easy win, with Faulkner second. In the Mad Dog A main, 13 riders filled up three rows. Tim Humphries broke off the line first, with Chris Fristoe, Landrum, and Stevie Nace following close behind. On the third lap, Fristoe used his momentum out of tum two to take the inside going into turn three. Fristoe was never challenged after the pass. Landrum tried fearlessly inside and out to take second from Humphries. On the last lap, Landrum finally took second place, diving inside on the back straightaway. Humphries finished third, with Nace a close fourth. In the Mad Dog B main, there were 10 riders filling two rows. Zack Palmer broke off the line in first, followed by Charlie Southgate, Brian Kamuf, Chad Burcham and Nick Daniels. Starting on the back row, Daniels came through the field to take the checkered flag first. followed by Burcham, Southgate and Kamuf. Results Flat Track 50 SHAFT: I.
