CMMC 2001 MX Season Finale Barona Daks Raceway Macomber Not Somber at Barona Finale distance of Swift. Matthew Adams finished third in the Supermini class after placing fourth in moto one and then coming back for a third. Trevor Reis closed out the year in a winning fashion in the 7-11 age group. First, in the 60cc class, Reis held off Cameron Drown in moto one. In the following moto, Reis held off Upper Alpine resident Dylan Schmoke, whose 4-2 efforts placed him third as Drown scored 2-3 on the day. Reis again brought home overall wins in both 80cc (7 -11) motos. Alberto Huerta kept Reis honest, taking second in both motos. Third overall went to Ivan Ramirez, who earned his trophy with fifth- and third-place finishes. All the action wasn't reserved for the young. Veteran Over 30 riders Ken Lurcook and Doug Rahders lined up for the final race of the season to decide their class championship. Rahders won the first race, creating a tie in season points. In the second outing, though, Lurcook made a point to take charge early as he followed eventual event winner Skip Edwards around turn one. Rahder was back in fourth. Lurcook kept his cool and settled for second in the event, which was enough to earn him the championship. Rahders had moved to third, behind Lurcook, but there was too much real estate between him and Lurcook to make a last-ditch effort for the championship. There were 18 Super Pee Wee riders ripping up the Barona track. When the dust settled, it was Blake Campos who stood atop the winners' podium. Campos took third in moto one, behind Carlos Don crossed and Daniel Overton. Campos did no wrong in the following moto to take the overall. Colt Hubbs trailed Campos, with Overton third. Overton earned the second-overall honors, while Hubbs' 4-2 showing was good enough for third on the day. Carlos Don went 1-5 for fourth. CN By HOMER EUBANKS RAMONA, CA, DEC. 2 he dust had just begun to settle as the sun set on the 2001 Barona Oaks motocross season. Several riders had taken unscheduled soil samples during the day, and with the nonprofit CMMC organization giving out numerous prizes, the event became an all-day affair. Most crowds would have filtered away, but the large spectator base refused to leave, as more than 200 riders had showed up to provide them with some extraordinary motocross action. Some of the fastest racing of the day was in the 125cc Intermediate class as Corey Macomber demonstrated his focused riding style around the Barona landscape. Macomber won both motos, leaving the runner-up battle to Zac Wray and Justin Hermann. Hermann managed the runner-up spot in moto one, but Wray came back to best his effort in the following moto and earn the second-overall honors. One race that caught everyone's attention was the 125cc Novice battle between Bobby Romero and Larry Reese Jr. The excitement between Romero and Reese erupted as soon as the gate fell on moto two. Romero took his Yamaha around turn one first, but Reese had his green Kawasaki glued to Romero's rear fender. Not content with second, Reese pressured Romero on several occasions. Reese pulled alongside Romero and took the temporary lead more than once. Many riders give up when passed, but Romero was able to be passed and then retake the lead on several occasions. This heated confrontation took place lap after lap during the five-lap event. Just as the white flag came out, Reese made a pass - and made this one stick. Romero excited the crowd as he closed in near the checkered flag but found he had to settle for second. Romero had placed ·eighth in the first moto, and this allowed the more consistent Travis MacDonald to take third overall with his 2-3 results. Cas Swift kept up his usual dominance in the 80cc classes. Swift dominated both the Supermini and 80cc Expert divisions. Swift made a clean sweep of the two classes, with his closest competition coming from the ever-present Joshua Huerta. Huerta had to settle for second in both motos, but he was the only rider of the field of 10 to stay within striking T 68 JANUARY 9,2002' cue • bcew., "rollll o.Jcs Ramollll, ClIlif11mi. Dealer Support Series Round 4: Pax Tm MX Park Gargano Grabs a Handful BY CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN BUNNELL, FL, DEC. 9 ohnnie Gargano grabbed a handful of throttle to win the combined 60cc-c1ass motos. Gargano grabbed too much while leading the first moto but came from behind to win the moto. In the second moto, he feathered the throttle just right to take a convincing win. Rain the night before made the track a little muddy in practice. As the fog burned off and the sun came out, the track dried throughout the day. Temperatures rose to the low 80s, and the air felt humid and sticky. In the first combined 60cc moto, Gargano grabbed the lead going down the back straight, only to relinquish it at the next corner. Thor's Mikey Morello and Cody Smith now led the pack, as Gargano dropped to fifth. Gargano charged to third, passing Alex Defrancisco and Jake Reigart. Gargano twisted the throttle to catch the two front-runners. Up front, Smith passed Morello over the step-up for the lead. Morello retook the lead through the S turns. This allowed Gargano to catch both of them. Gargano dived to the inside of the bowl turn to surprise the two leaders and retake the lead. Gargano took the win, over Morello and Smith. Gargano led the second moto from start to finish. Morello and Smith were second and third. The top three pulled away, and the race was for the fourth position. Reigart, Defrancisco, Chase Northrip, Aaron Beausoleil and Schmitt all swapped positions back and forth. Schmitt and Beausoleil finally finished in the fourth and fifth positions. j Jeffrey Tyson narrowly got the holeshot in the first 125cc Intermediate moto, over Christopher Belcher. Dane White took command by the end of the first lap. Tyson dropped to second, as Mike Foster, Raymond Whitley and Belcher followed. Whitley worked up to the second position, only to fall on the last lap while pressuring White for the lead. White won the moto over Tyson. Belcher recovered for third, and Whitley picked himself back up for fourth. White led the second moto from start to finish. Whitley was the one to watch. Suffering a bad start, Whitley worked his way up to fourth and then reeled in Belcher for third. Whitley made the pass on the last lap as the duo charged up behind second. Tyson held on for the second posi- Pax Trax MX Park: Dane White was a double·moto winner in the 125cc Intermediate class at round four of the fourth annual Dealer Support Series In Bunnell, Florida.
