J.S. Bridwell Arena: Michael Hinds (90) takes the lead from A.J. Eslick (69G) at the first indoor short track of the winter season in Wichita Falls, Texas. Texas Winter Indoor Series Round 1: J.S. Bridwell Arena Hinds by a Foot BY DAN MAHONY WICHITA FALLS, TX, NOV. 10 he spacious J.S. Bridwell Arena played host to the first area indoor short track of the winter season. Checkered Flag Productions received over 130 entries for 15 separate classes, making for a long but exciting evening. A full house contributed to promoter Ed Beckley's big smile, as did the fact that his son Scott took top honors in the 250cc main event. Lucas Scherb grabbed the holeshot, but young Beckley made the pass at the end of lap one and was never headed. After a slow start, Danny Eslick moved up to challenge Beckley's 250cc Rotax but came up short at the checkers. Scherb finished third, over Kansan Kent Briggs and Jason Kirby. Bultaco jockey Peter Elmer jumped to the lead in the 250-400cc Vintage class but met with the red flag at the end of lap one when James Vergaween crashed out of the race. Benny Spear beat Elmer to the corner on the restart, but another red flag - for Mark Allen - and another restart gave the lead and the win to Elmer. Frank Hardman hauled his Harley Sprint all the way from Colorado Springs and into second place at the finish, over David Thompson. Six Pee Wees came to the line for their final, and KTM rider Tyler Rister led all six laps. Dakota Jones finished second on a Lem, followed by the KTMs of local boys Steven Webb and Mason Smith. T 60 JANUARY 9, 2002' cue I • In 60-80cc action, Tye Jackson took the win over Colt Chebultz, Matt Castloo and David Williams. In the Mad Dog Mini contest, winner John Varbel had the most fun of the night, dicing with James Taylor. Hardman finished third, over Glen McNamara and Kevin Mcintire. Freddie Beale took home the gold in the Vintage Super Senior class. After a poor showing in his heat, Beale snared the holeshot and held off repeated challenges from Oklahoma's Varbel to win the eight-Iapper. Colorado's Bill Burr finished third, over Georgia's DuWayne Montgomery. Taylor's 250cc Yamaha was the highest finishing small bike, in fifth. The Over 30 class fell to Tom Troudt, who led all laps over fellow Rotax rider Darin Combs. Terry Wright came home third, ahead of Van Simkins and Norman Looney. Dan Rowland led the first three laps of the Vintage Amateur 600cc contest, gave way to Yamaha pilot John Gregory on lap fOUT, retook the point on the next go-around, and then the two crashed with a lap to go. Englewood, Colorado's David Austin took over for the checkers, ahead of Ronnie Weger and Chuck Ruiz. Juan Gomez took fourth. Russell Briggs of Kansas made his win in the Vintage Pro Twin event look easy, leading all laps aboard his 750cc Yamaha over Steven Bland and Bill Snyder, on similar mounts. Old Pro Johnny Isaacs just stomped 'em in the Vintage Pro Masters on his spiffy new 540cc Yamaha in a trick frame. Snyder, McNamara, Harry Cone and Dan Maloney rounded out the top five. The Vintage Pro 600cc class was one of the largest of the meet. The win went to Yamaha-mounted Richard Stinn of Colorado, whose drive off the line kept him out front. Bill Lewis came down from Anchorn e _ s age, Alaska, to zap Mitch Hovden for second on lap three. Rusty Bond picked up third on the last lap when Hovden had Problems. Colorado's Shane Arndt finished fourth, over Blane Fore. Justin West broke a chain off the line, which brought the Open Amateur final back for a restart. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Danny Eslick got the jump, led the laps, and won the gold. Van Simkins was second, ahead of Terry Wright and David Austin. Wrecks, restarts and road rash were the order of the day for the 250505cc Pro Sport riders. The most serious crash of the night involved early leader Cory West and Adams Racing's Bret Sowders; the latter broke his leg severely after hitting West and then the steel-pipe fence, and he'll be out of action for the winter. On the final go-around, Illinois rider Robert Pearson nipped Merle Scherb for the win, over Isaacs and Joel Lacer, in the largest class of the evening. Scherb redeemed himself in the 600cc Pro Sport main, leading the entire eight-Iapper. Arndt finished second, with Pearson and Justin Whitney in tow. New National number 90, Michael Hinds, got the jump on the Open Pro/Expert final, but his fellow Oklahoman A.J. Eslick stuffed him hard to take the point on lap two. The two friends traded tire and footpeg rubber for a couple of laps before Hinds (in a friendly way) ran his ATK over Eslick's foot and grabbed the lead for good. Clayton Hull rode into third after a slow start but couldn't do anything with the lead duo. Mark Witham finished fourth, over Billy Bevers and Wyoming's Richard Marrs. CH J.s. KaceTek Southeast Motocross Series Round Four: County Line MX Scott's Clean SW"eep BY AUSTIN GATLIN FOONTA1N, Flo NOV. 11 he KaceTek Southeast Motocross Series moved back to County Line MX, and Yamaha-mounted Karl Scott topped both the 125cc and 250cc Money classes. Weather and track conditions were perfect for the 120 riders in attendance. Scott absconded with the holeshot in the first 125cc Money/B moto, with Brian Young on his rear wheel. Clint Stagner ran third, ahead of Stephen Rawls. While Young stayed close to Scott, Rodney Allen passed Rawls on the back straight. On lap four, Young made a pass attempt for the lead, but then settled for second, behind Scott. Next in were Yamaha riders Stagner and Allen. Rawls was fifth on his KX125. Stagner led race two, ahead of Scott and Young. Scott moved past Stagner, and then Young passed for second on a downhill jump. Scott built a commanding lead and posted another win. Young unexpectedly pulled his RM 125 off the track for a T DNF. Stagner and Allen battled bar to bar for second, with Allen taking the spot. Rounding out the top five were Rawls and Matt Hamilton. Local legend Ricky Palmer returned to competition after a twoyear layoff and entered the Vet class. Riding for track time and not officially scored, Palmer and his CR250 were the fastest combination in the 10-rider field. Palmer passed early leader Tim Stokes in the first moto and rode his own race to the finish. John Hanford placed third. Lee Kober brought his KX250 in fourth, ahead of Bruce Key. Palmer led race two from start to finish. Stokes held second in the early going but then slipped to fifth. Hanford earned second, over Ricky Steverson and Kober. In the first 125cc C moto, Sean Collins came around the first turn ahead of Buck Hartzog and Corey Patrick. Collins gave way to Patrick in the whoop section but then went back out front on the long back straight. Collins built a small lead and won, ahead of fellow Yamaha riders Hartzog, Patrick and Key. KX125-mounted Matt Peevy placed fifth.
