Minibike superstars Kyle Swanson, Blaze Blackburn and Chance Winters all enjoyed class victories during the event. Swanson and Blackburn also brought home the gold for Team Texas in the 85cc championship, followed closely by Team Colorado, which consisted of Derek Howerton and Jeremy Huddleston. Any time you line up 30 Pro racers at the starting gate and dangle a $20,000 cash purse in front of them, you are guaranteed an exciting race. The 250cc Pro class ran two 20minute-plus-one-Iap motos, with riders shOWing up from as far away as Oregon, California and Ohio. Smith/DNG Racing/HJC/Axo/White Brothersbacked Spud Walters returned to Texas with a Honda 450-F and the desire to win the lion's share of the Pro purse. Walters ripped the first-moto holeshot, followed by American Honda/Blackfoot Honda's Heath Voss, Reynard Modifications/Cti2-backed Johnny Marley, Baker Boys Yamaha/ Star Racing's Chase Reed, and Shoei/HHR/Troy Lee Designs-backed James Marshall. Just a few laps into the race, Marley passed Walters for the lead and the first-moto win. Walters finished in second, followed by Jacob Martin, Marshall and Voss. Brian Johnson did not finish after coming up short on the track's big triple and sending his KTM crashing through a wire fence and into a truck full of spectators parked just outside the facility. (Maybe next year, they will pay the park's admission fee and park inside the fence - where they should have been to begin with!) Amazingly, Johnson walked away unhurt. Cannondale's Robbie Reynard was (Right) In the second Over 30 championship qualifier, Chuck Young (834) grabs the hoieshot in front of Keith Simmons (99), Kent Howerton (17), David Bingham (XI, Lawrence Morris'(3), Cesar Lombrana (14) and the rest of the pack. all set to come to Texas, but a broken wrist sidelined his plans for the weekend. His father, Robert, brought down Oklahoma's Marley instead and let him race Robbie's supercross bike after they toned it down a bit to better suit Marley's riding style. Reynard will ride red indoors for 2002 and be back on his Cannondales for the outdoor Nationals. In the second 250cc Pro moto, Waiters was once again up front, followed by Martin, Marley, Voss, Marshall and New Mexico's Keith Johnson. Walters suddenly crashed on a downhill double and was almost knocked out cold, and he took Yamaha-mounted Martin down with him. Voss took over the lead and never looked back on his way to the second-moto victory. Waiters and Martin were okay and somehow finished out the race. Johnson crossed the :finish line in second, followed by Marshall, Marley and EVS/ Rentha I/Du n lop/C ycra/Perfo rmance Factory-backed Jeff Gibson. KTM/Thor/Fletchtrick/TwinAir/Motocross Plus-backed first-year Pro Rory Sullivan turned a few heads in Texas, as he finished out the day going 9-6 for a credible sixth overall. Over at the finish-line tabietop. Marley, Voss and Marshall celebrated a job well done as the track announcer threw some questions at them. "This track is one of the top three in the nation," Voss declared, adding that he loves living in the Texas hill country just outside of San Antonio. "' moved here from Minnesota one year ago to escape from the cold and snow so that I could practice more." The Cycle Ranch staff is to be commended for their dedication and devotion to a first-class facility and for promoting the sport of motocross. Steve Bums and track manager/builder Mike eN Pitts have a perfect race track. Cycle Ranch MX Park Floresville, Te.Ds Results: November 23-25, 2001 50 (4·6): 1. Chance Winters (Cob); 2.
