Midwest Challenge Series Round 7: Henry County Fairgrounds Moneymaker, Miller, Orr End on a High Note By RANDY SANSOM -_---.:~ ----=-----=---- PARIS, TN, OCT. 27 T he seventh and final round of the Midwest Challenge Series was held in Paris, Tennessee. The final evening's events signified the close of the 11 th annual series. With many class championships on the line, points were crucial and the competition was intense. Rider turnout was strong, as more than 260 riders from six states swarmed the Henry County Fairgrounds with one thing on each of their minds: to win races. The large crowd on hand witnessed a great night of stadiacross racing action. After the racing ended, an awards ceremony was held in an adjacent building, where the abundant series trophies, series sponsors' products and contingencies were given out to the riders. Multiple-class champions included Jordan Moneymaker, Cody Miller and Kenny Dale Orr. The combined 250cc A/250cc B contest started the evening off with a neck-and-neck drag race to the first tum between two of the series' fastest riders, Jamaal Bond and Moneymaker. Kawasaki-mounted Moneymaker grabbed the point position. Bond was a close second, pursued by Evansville, Indiana rider Jason Stills. Moneymaker was on a tear, determined not to let Bond get within striking distance. By lap two, Bond was in attack mode, trying every trick in the book to get past Moneymaker, but Moneymaker held tough and had a decisive answer for every move Bond attempted. When the checkers flew for the four-lap qualifier, the oeder was Moneymaker, Bond and KTM thumper pilot Stills. In the combined 16-24 and Over 25 A qualifier, Toby Kimbro pushed his Honda into the lead on the opening lap and set a rapid pace. Bond followed closely in second and was fending off the advances of Stills, who was a close third. Moneymaker gated poorly and was circulating the track in eighth place, but he was on the gas and he immediately began to thread his way through the pack. By lap two, Bond passed Over 25 A rider Kimbro and set off on a tear of his own. Before the lap's end, Stills, also an Over 25 A rider, motored past Kimbro through the stadium whoop section and set his sights on the leader. Although Bond took over the point position, he did not pull too far away from the field. In fact, as the checkers flew after four short laps, Bond took the win with about a two-second cushion over Stills, who had a threesecond margin over Kimbro. In the respective classes, however, Bond took the 16-24 victory over RM 125 rider Jared Arnold; Moneymaker; Clarksville, Tennessee YZF rider Kevin Murphy, who nabbed fourth; and Adam Manning, who finished fifth. In the Over 25 A portion, Stills took a close win over red rider Kimbro. When the 250cc A final got under way, quick-starting Moneymaker seized the holeshot, with Bond and Stills in hot pursuit. The racing action was fast and furious as the laps clicked off. Lap times were hovering just under the 30-second mark by all three riders. Bond tried his usual aggressive moves on Moneymaker, but the effort was futile. Meanwhile, Stills was watching this action from a close third, just looking for opportunities. As the final event approached the midpoint, Bond's front end washed while attempting a tight inside pass on Moneymaker. This opened the door for Stills, who graciously took second and motored on toward the checkers. After this, the running order stayed the same for the remainder of the moto, with Moneymaker taking a convincing win over Stills and Bond. The combined 16-24 and Over 25 A final had all the usual speedy suspects, as well as a few new faces entered into the mix. Bond powered his CR125 into the lead but got too much throttle in the first turn and slid around, allOWing Kimbro and Moneymaker to sneak by before recovering. By the middle of lap two, Moneymaker made a strategic pass on Kimbro entering the banked turn following the stadium whoops and assumed the point position on his KX250. Before the lap was complete, Stills also pow- ered by Kimbro and set off after the leader. Bond was also on the gas, and he moved past Kimbro with a block -pass at the beginning of lap three. At the midpoint, the scorecard read Moneymaker alone in first, followed by Honda-mounted Bond, Stills and then Kimbro. For the remaining four laps, the running order largely remained the same; however, on lap six, Moneymaker began to hit overdrive and he increased his margin on Bond. When the checkers flew for the 16-24 class, it was Moneymaker over Bond, followed by RM pilot Manning; Benton, Kentucky resident Shane Kissiar; and thumper pilot Murphy. The Over 25 A-class win went to 400SX rider Stills, over CR250mounted Toby Kimbro. eN Henry County Fairgrounds: Jamaal Bond (547) leads Kevin M!'rphy (89) in combined 12Scc A and 125cc B action at the final round of the Midwest Challenge Series in Paris, Tennessee.
